I wrote some time ago about your medium sized trap (for squirrels). We bought an old farmhouse about three years ago that was infested with critters, so bought a squirrel trap first. It was incredible! We caught two squirrels in one trap one day, and soon got rid of them out of the house. When we discovered racoons in the woodshed that is attached to the house, we bought an easy-set larger trap. It has been just as good - catching racoons each night that we set the trap. This morning when we got up, we discovered two racoons in the trap! I took a photo and would love to share it with you if you'd like (but have no way to attach here). Please let me know if you'd like a copy. Thanks for such a great line of products! We've also purchased a small trap for chipmunks. To date, we have removed almost 100 critters of various sizes from our property! I don't mind nature if it doesn't want to share my living quarters!! Jo
Great TrapJune 16, 2013
Caught a couple problem groundhogs with this trap. It is very easy to set and release. No little parts to mess with, just slide the handle back and off they go.
Great Trap for the Money~!!!June 13, 2013
I've had it for 30 days now and I've caught 1 Fox, 1 Oppossum, 1 Blue Jay, 2 Racoons and 4 stray cats...the key is to cover the trap with weeds, grass, small limbs with lots of leaves, etc., especially the bottom of the cage so it feels like they are walking on grass once they get in it...a smart fox doesn't like walking on wire and can easily spot a trap if not camo'd correctly. Then, bait...any meet, but especially fishy smelling bait. I put my trap behind my chicken coop so I can catch anything that might otherwise try to get my chickens...it's a lot easier for a fox to eat the tuna in the trap than to try and dig under the walls of the coop, so it's worked so far. Also, be sure to put the bait in the very back corners so they have to walk back there and it trips the trigger. Very easy to set, but depending on where exactly you put the "little hook wire" that holds the cage door up when set. Slide it back to where it barely seems to hold it up and it'll be a hair trigger - that's the only way to be sure you get everything that comes in...I even caught a Blue Jay I set my so lightly triggered.
Havahart 2 - Ferals 0August 23, 2012
Oh baby, this thing is schweeet. I had a wannabeferal killing birds by my feeder and tromping all our flowers. Bought this CATraption and used some cat food with beef pate in it. One hour later, and slam. Two bluebirds were yakking lound and perched on the fence near the trap. It was if they were mocking the cat.
We took a long, long, long drive. I had to get gas on the way back type of long drive. When released that cat took off like a cheetah. It was still running a 100 yards later.

As the advertisement states....easy set, easy catch and easy release. The racoons had a choice of being relocated or becoming an ice fishing hat. Thanks to Havahart on behalf of the raccoons
Large Animal TrapMay 01, 2012
This is a great produc. I have trapped close to 35 racoons using dry cat food. I would reccomend Havahart Traps to anyone needing a trap.
Worked perfectly!April 21, 2012
We have a small dog and a large wooded backyard. Oh and a possum that passes through. The dog usually chases it up a tree but we didn't want them getting into it since the possum has nasty claws and teeth. Door wouldn't set at first but after pushing down on the mesh wire above the opening slightly it set fine. Very sensitive trigger so small animals should set it off. No door on the trigger end for bait so I mashed a spoon of peanut butter and a spoon of cat food through the mesh top behind the trigger plate. Set it out at dusk after the squirrels bedded down. Checked it at 11 p.m. and the possum was in the trap and all secure. Relocated it a few miles away in the woods. Sat on my tail gate with the trap on the ground and pulled the release handle and off it walked into the woods. Now the dog can play in the yard without me being on critter watch. As for the racoon reviews and damaging the trap, I'd recommend upgrading to the more durable model. Couldn't be happier with this one and it's ease of use.

I purchased this trap last year from a retailer here in GA and I've had success after success in catching, transporting for spay/neuter and holding overnight of the local feral before releasing. The neighborhood population is down significantly as the number of un-spayed females has been drastically reduced. Thanks for the tip to bury the bait!!!
Great for opossumAugust 22, 2011

This trap is solid and simple to operate. I fought with a competitive brand for months and got fed up with the opossum cleaning out the trap without sprining it. This Havahart trap sets super-easy and keeps you out of harm's way. Caught the nuisance opossum on the first try compared to five failed attempts on brand x. Would buy again in a heartbeat. Good job.

Thank you for taking the time to submit and online review for the Havahart® Large Easy Set® Raccoon Trap (model 1085). We are so glad to hear that you are pleased with the trap and appreciate your feedback.
We really like Havahart traps! Last year we trapped and relocated 9 raccoons. This year, we ordered the new Model 1085 and got immediate results. In fact, the first day, we trapped 2 raccoons at once!!! The trap is really easy to bait and it's a breeze to set. Here's a You Tube link to a one-minute video of the two critters just before we relocated them to the woods outside of town: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TigKxE3GzUY
Absolutely PerfectJune 24, 2011
We have had stray cats we couldn't get rid of and they crawled over everything. Received this trap in record time. Set trap per instructions, caught cat. Next night a repeat with the same results. Thanks Havahart for the perfect trap. I wouldn't change a thing.
I LOVE thisMarch 06, 2011
I've been doing Trap Test Neutor and Release for years. My Havahart was wonderful, I didn't think they could get better. Much to my surprise, they did. This one is lighter than my old one and fits in my car better. It also has smaller mesh, so I can hold it closer to my body.
The bigger metal plate under the carrying handle is great, but even better is the easy open handle. This means I can open the trap to release racoons without having my fingers close to the gate.
I really do love this and I'm happily spreading the word through the local rescue community.
Work slike a charmJuly 21, 2010

Works well and fastJuly 08, 2010
I just got my Trap yesterday,,,, I put it out in my garden and went inside and had lunch, went back out after two hours or so and ... wow,, I caught a fat ground hog..... I did not expect to catch one so fast... this trap works well and and east to release the animal also... thanks so much....AC
Simple and EffectiveMarch 18, 2010
I had never used a trap before when I put this one out, baited with tuna, to catch a feral cat. Over the next 2hrs I caught 2 feral kittens, a feral cat, an opossum, and a raccoon. I was able to safely and easily release all of the others and transport the cat (in the trap) to the SPCA for TNR. The raccoon, BTW, went into the trap even when there was no bait. I had to close the trap to keep animals out of it. I have since caught a number of additional cats for TNR with the trap. I'm pretty much guaranteed a catch each time I set it out.
None of the animals have shown any sign of so much as a scratch from the cage nor have any managed to escape. I'm quite pleased with this trap.
It really works!January 30, 2010
We bought this trap for our own house cat that got out and had been missing for several days. We caught another cat twice (the trap works!), but after moving the trap to where our cat had been recently sighted, we caught him on the 2nd night at the new location.
Thank you - we have our kitty back and are overjoyed!!

I put my trap on site overnight and baited/set it at 9am. My woodchuck was trapped less than six hours later. What a pleasant surprise to buy a product that works as advertised! So efficient yet so easy.

My husband and I are working on getting a colony of feral cats spayed and neutered and just bought the Havahart #1085 trap to begin trapping the cats to transport them to the clinic.
We set the trap and within 10 minutes we caught 2 cats on our very first attempt. We plan on buying at least one more #1085 to get our mission completed sooner and do our share in helping to eliminate overpopulation of these precious little creatures.
Havaheart Large 1 Door Easy Set TrapAugust 15, 2012
Like the other Havaheart traps that I've owned, this trap is well made and it IS easy to set. The only complaint I have with this trap is that the trigger mechanism is almost too sensitive and the trap sometimes springs as an animal is entering through the door, before it even gets to the trip pan, allowing the animal to back out without getting caught. All things considered though, I'm happy with the trap.
RabbitsAugust 08, 2010
I have caught 3 rabbits since the spring but some rabbits will go into the cage and eat the food without springing the trap door. There needs to be about another 2 inches of room so the rabbits almost have to spring the trap if they want to eat. Rabbits also are like fish. They don't always go for the same bait all the time.
sick of critters in my gardenJuly 08, 2010
Reviewer: weary gardener
Most of the time I catch something within 24 hours. Unfortunately, it's not always what I want to catch. Caught about 5 groundhogs, 5 skunks, 2 possums, a few squirrels. I am trying to catch one very elusive groundhog who seems to know what the trap is all about. He won't go in it. I'm also trying to catch 2 cute, but destructive, bunnies. So far, they're not interested in my trap. I've only tried a few times with rabbit bait, though. I'm trying again tonight. I've never caught more than one animal at a time. I don't understand what the others are talking about when they say they've caught so many animals at the same time?!!. The trap was expensive, but I wished I'd invested in one that the animal can enter on either end. I've seen them trying to figure out how to get the bait from the wrong end a few times. Oh, well. Tonight is another night.
Easy Set for RaccoonsJune 15, 2010
Reviewer: Uncle Crapper
Set the trap with cat food & marshmallows and a small animal tripped it and escaped through the mesh. Set again and caught 25lb raccoon at midnite. After release, set again and at 3:45am caught a big 45 lb'er. He bent the trip plate and rod by lifting up on it as hard as he could. Didn't know if I could get at the mechanism to straighten and repair it but got it partway straight so it would EasySet again. Caught another 25 lb'er last nite. The trap works, but the trip plate and rod are easily damaged by the bigger raccoons. Next trap will be a different model.
Not big enoughAugust 22, 2012
This trap was good for adolescent racoons, but the adults managed to eat the bait and backout even if the door had triggered to close. Their tails must have prevented the door from 'locking'. Had to use a larger 42" trap for the adult racoons.

Thank you for your online review of the Havahart® Large 1-Door Easy Set® Trap (model 1085). Havahart® live traps are tested based on the average size for the animal they are intended to trap. We are sorry to hear that some of the raccoons have been able to escape. We do have the Havahart® Ex Large 1-Door Trap (model 1081) that can be used for large raccoons, however we would like to offer you some tips that may allow you to use the trap that you purchased.
Try putting the bait inside a piece of PVC piping. Tie the pipe to the roof of the trap so that it's hanging above the bait pan. With this, the animal will then have to maneuver over the pan to eat the bait, ensuring that the animal is fully inside the trap when the doors close, allowing them to lock.
We hope this information has been helpful. Above all, we want to ensure that you are satisfied with your purchase. Please do not hesitate to contact our Consumer Relations Team at 1-855-5-HAVAHART (1-855-542-8242) for further assistance.

Easy to set but has design problemsJune 18, 2012
The trap worked fine for the first raccoon but then we found that the raccoons were able to reach through the cage and get the bait. We tried placing the bait in the center and as far from all sides as possible but they could reach it. We covered the outside bottom and sides of the bait with wire screen and secured with plastic ties. The raccoons made holes in the screen and reached through to get the food. They also moved the cage across the yard until we started securing it to the ground with landscape pins. They seemed to learn about the trap by watching others get caught. They also climbed on the top and sprang the trap from the top as they were figuring out how to get the food without going in. We eventually caught 5 raccoons after various adaptations but are now facing a raccoon who seems to have figured out the trap and won't allow himself to be caught. We are taking extreme steps now - we rigged a large plastic tub placed on 4x4's (as the foundation to allow the mechanism on the top to move), placed a cinder block on top of it and duct taped the tub to the 4x4s. We then placed two cinder blocks on end at the front of the cage, placed a board over them and a cinder block on top to hold all (this covered the locking gate that the raccoons continually climb on and set off. In the morning, the tub was chewed up, pushed off of the 4x4s, and all of the food in the trap had been taken out by the raccoon from the outside. Oh yes, the trap door was shut. I have pictures and would appreciate any help. The trap closure functions fine - it's just that the raccoon will not go in, especially when he has been so successful in dining from the outside.
Need better locking mechanismJune 23, 2012
The easy catch latch woks great.
The locking mechanism doesnt keep the racoons in the cage as they are able to push their way out. Need a larger "plastic" stop on the lid, and a better way to keep the "U" shape locking bar in place as th animals can push on the aluminum locking door pushing the "U" shape locking bar up.

i caught the nuisance groundhog in you new 1085 last week. Came home and saw him in the trap to my delight and decided to eat dinner before dealing with the release. Saw him pushing the door to no avail but when i went to the trap about 30 minutes later he was gone. clearly he had been able to push open the door because it never latched properly and it looks unreliable to me. Now he avoids the trap at all costs. Now what do you suggest???

Set up according to manufacturer specifications. First trapped racoon ripped the back door free and broke some of the wire welds in less than five minutes (caught on game camera).
Reset trap and repaired door. Second trapped racoon broke another wire weld and ripped the door almost completely off in less than ten minutes.
