I had a problem with pesky fox squirrels raiding my bird feeders for the last two years. I bought the model 1045 for catching these squirrels. At first I didn't have any luck. I baited the cage with some black sun flower seeds in a bowl but I must have don't something wrong.
Finally I noticed that the squirrels were walking along the top of my deck's railing. So I used some long zip lock ties to attach the trap along the top of the railing. Within two days I had my first male fox squirrel in the trap. I released him at a near buy fish and wildlife area.
I set the trap and the next two days I caught the second male fox squirrel that had been raiding my bird feeders for the last two years. Another pest was relocated miles away.
Now I've discovered that I have a raccoon raiding one of my lower hanging bird feeders. I'm baiting the cage with an apple with honey and sunflower seeds on the apple. I cored the middle out of the green apple and hung it above the traps trip plate with a wire. I'm hoping to draw the raccoon into the cage with a trail of honey coated sun flower seeds. I'm going to add some sardines tomorrow night if I'm not successful tonight.

I bought a 2- door large squirrel trap and just wanted to let you and anyone else that might think that this product isnt worth the money, then they are mistaken. Last spring and summer I was being beaten down by a bunch of mean and devious little squirrels. Up until I bought this trap, it was squirrels 7 and Kevin 0. I had broken windows, feeders, and was getting to the point of going crazy. Being in the city limits, I can not shoot them and really didnt want too. I have a large white oak tree in my back yard, loaded with acorns. At one time I have counted 12 squirrels plotting and planning my demise. July 1st 2011, I bought this trap. It took awhile but I had figured it out (what to use for bait). With a little peanut butter and some really small dry cat food, I have caught 3 in one day. I take them for a ride to a park about 7 miles away. To end this testimonial, it is now (Feb 2012) squirrels 7, and Kevin 23. Yeah

This trap is simply awesome. Caught everything from cats and groundhogs to skunks. This trap always performs flawlessly from catching said animal to releasing said animal. I highly recommend these live traps. Made in U.S.A too. Live down the street from their facility.
Off to a great start! November 01, 2010
We have a possum that is eating the dog food at night and 3 feral cats that like to fight with our 2 cats. I picked one of these up last night from a local retailer and nabbed one of the cats the first night!
Great product! Our local animal control officer wasn't aware these were available locally but will happily let folks know. :)
Chicken killer September 06, 2009
Reviewer: Big Bob
I had a racoon that no matter what I did would find its way into my chicken coop. Tried other traps and baits with rat killer in them with no sucess. The first night with my Havahart 1045 trap was a sucess. Marshmallows on a slice of bread. No racoon problems since.
Trapping Groundhogs June 02, 2008
I live in a city suburb, and have had a groundhog in my yard for a few years. This year, she had a litter, and my next door neighbor wanted to catch and kill the lot. I was devastated. I know they are pesty, but I was quite fond of them.
Well, cantaloup was evidently irresistible to these critters. I caught 5 of them (two adults and 3 babies) with 6 hours. I relocated all to the same location on a friend's property.

In less than 18 hours, I had the attic living raccoon in the trap!

I used this trap to capture feral cats on our land. We were able to capture all 6 - mom and babies -and bring them all to the ASPCA for spaying and neutering and then released them back on our property. The mom and one of the sons are still here 4 years later and are doing fine.
The big one that got away. June 29, 2011
I have raccoons that raids my pond to eat my goldfish. I picked up the model 1045 and caught a young raccoon the first night. The next 2 nights, my sardine in the trap was gone, the trap door was closed but no raccoon.
I think the big raccoon was in the trap which I saw running on the fence a few weeks back. I figure he was in the trap, trip the door but his tail was preventing the door from closing all the way and lock. He finish his free meal and back out with not problem.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with the Havahart® Two Door Raccoon Trap (model #1045). As you have described, at times larger animals may have the ability to reach inside with their hind quarters partially outside of the trap, allowing them to back out stealing bait without being trapped. To prevent this it is recommended to set your trap as a one door trap. You will then place or even tie your bait at the far closed end of the trap. This will require the animal’s body to be completely enclosed inside the trap when it is set off.
