We tried a preparation containing bacillus thuringienesis (Bt) 10-15 years ago to kill grubs in the lawn. It was a failure. I later read that manufacturers were shipping dead preparations. (Bt is a family of bacteria living naturally in soil. The bacteria in the preparation must be live to be useful.)
Now (June 2011) we had cabbage worms eating the leaves of our young Brussels sprout plants. Extension services recommended Bt, so we bought this product. It worked! The directions are not very thorough, but the package is a very effective dust sprayer. Shake the package, aim the orifice and give the bottle a good steady squeeze and you get a nice dust spray. Focus on the new buds. Our plants are doing fine without worm damage in the new growth a week after treatment.

I keep my plants in containers on the deck, so I did NOT want anything toxic. This has certainly been a good choice for that, I used it on my veggies with no problem. It has a clean, kind of waxy smell, not harsh or chemical.
I'm not an experienced enough gardener to know exactly how much credit to give it, this is my first year, but every single plant has survived and thrived.
Our tomatoes, strawberries, and blueberries are fine, our raspberries seem to be starting to bear fruit, and I haven't had any bug problems at all, and no leaf discoloration. Our potatoes are going wild, I think we can live on french fries next year if we want!
I don't know if gardening is easier than I thought or if this stuff is the reason I had no fatalities, but not a single leaf got munched on by bugs.
I'll use this, and probably only this, from now on.
Pray and spray, those are my gardening secrets! :)

I planted a lot of seeds this past spring and now have a lush vegetable, herb and flower garden on a balcony in NYC. Usually aphids and other small bugs gravitate to many of my plants since it is "fresh food" to them in the city. About two weeks ago I noticed those little green aphids on the new growth of my cosmos, peppers and tomatoes. I sprayed them with Safer Brand Insect Killer and they started moving around but shortly stopped in their tracks. The next day I noticed they were all dead. More bugs came back a few days later, but I sprayed again and no problem! I feel better using this product because it IS safer than using traditional chemicals and it works! I will continue to buy this product so I can enjoy my veggies and flowers all season long!

After I got this product I had to wait until my tomato plants got bugs before I could review it - and just when you want bugs they don't come! But at last I saw some chewed leaves and could test it. Very easy to use of course and as it organic you can use it right up to harvest. I have used on my tomatoes, peppers, beans and cucumbers quite successfully - all the leaf chewing has stopped and it has not bothered the bees at all and my plants are thriving. I have hopes that it will help me to a great harvest. I'll update this review as time passes.

I have several tomato and cucumber plants growing this year and within days of planting my early girl variety they had holes in all the leaves and yellowing. I sprayed the plant lightly since it was only 6 inches high and within two days the plant turned green again and the holes have begun repairing themselves. This spray is made out of some kind of organic oil that must suffocate insects, it has no odor or color and didn't hurt my tiny plants. It did as it promised and very quickly, I highly recommend if you have a bug issue on your veggies, but are afraid to spray a bug killer on something you will eventually be eating.

We got this for our herb garden, as well as for the tomatoes that we will be planting soon. For the herbs, it got rid of the aphids after the first use. I sprayed too much on a couple of plants and a few of the leaves fell off. Then I re-read the directions and it said do not spray to the point of run-off!
I was a little worried about the pyrethrin, especially for edible plants. So I did a little research. Apparently it is a derivative from the chrysanthemum and if sprayed in the evening it will dissipate by morning (according to a 'gardenguides' site I found on herb gardening). So for edible plants it is apparently doable.
And I'll be washing my herbs before eating anyway. I'm just glad to find something that works.

As an organic gardener for many years, Safer products have been my mainstay. For a large garden it makes sense to purchase the concentrate and mix up your own spray. For houseplants or a small raised bed, this large spray bottle is perfect. If it's just an aphid infestation, blast them off with a hose. For tougher bugs, mites, scale and fungal diseases, grab the Safer spray. You need to be sure to coat the undersides of leaves as well as the tops.

I've been raising tomatoes in organic raised square foot beds for about 10 years now, with very few problems. Each year I plant a handful of varieties, and they grow like crazy...but sometimes they meet their match in bugs!
For years I've trusted Safer Brand 5118 Insect Killing Soap - 16-Ounce Concentrate, but this year I've had the opportunity to try the tomato and vegetable specific soap.
I did go to Safer's website to be sure this was still the sort of product I'd be comfortable using on the food I'm going to eat, and it is. There are MSDS and full instruction sheets that you can download in PDF format. Safer's Tomato & Vegetable Insect Killer does a better job on the little creepy things that attack the gorgeous vegetables I grow. I'll continue to use the plain Safer Soap on my roses to kill the aphids that attack their buds each year.

I intended to plant tomatoes this year and didn't get around to it so I gave the Safer Brand 5085 Tomato and Vegetable Insect Killer to my sister to test out for me. Day before yesterday I went to see her. She was so happy! She has several big palms that had moldy type bugs on them. She decided to spray the palms. The moldy bugs were gone and her palms were fine. The spray is working very well for the tomatoes and not hurting the plants. This is the kind of spray that gardeners are looking for. The lable says that you can even spray right up to the harvest.

We just staked some of our tomatoes and two Knock Out roses with these. Unlike another reviewer our stakes were solid, the same kind you get at your local big box hardware store. We did sink the stakes about 6 inches in the ground (just like we do other stakes). We did the roses because they are so filled with blooms they needed support. It was nice these were green because they aren't visible at all. We found ours locally.

My bottle of Safer Brand tomato and vegetable spray arrived just in time, as I noticed a few pests on my young spring vegetable seedlings. And I'm happy to say that this product worked, and worked well. I've used Pyrethrins for garden insect control for over 20 years, and while I'm sure there may be more potent products around, I am comfortable using them on various home-grown produce to be consumed by our family. As the label says, "Safer...[and] .. insect killer."

Our garden is just getting started - no tomatos yet. We do have a bunch of other vegetables though and some are showing signs of insect damage. I also have some tulips that are getting eaten up. I used this on both the vegetables and the tulips. It seemed to work and did not do any damage - even to the smaller saplings. I left one plant untreated as a "control" and it clearly had more insect damage than the treated plants. It's not perfect, but it made a clear difference.

This product works great for spot treatments, when you don't have a lot of time to do a more thorough job, or when you plan to harvest from the plant in the next day or so. If you buy it to spray your whole garden--and your garden is larger than ten plants or so--then I think you'll be less than satisfied. It's not really for large treatments--your trigger finger (and your pocketbook) will take a beating if you attempt to spray a large area with many large or tall or leafy plants.
We have many veggie gardens around the house and the largest is about 25' X 25'. We have major problems with the cucumber beetle and sometimes the tomato hornworm. When I see those bag guys, I like to zap them quick. Often I don't have time to mix up a batch of spray for a thorough job, so I use this product. Sometimes I can't use the big sprayer because the wind is blowing too hard--this little sprayer bottle is handy to have at those times, too, because you can get right down close to the critters. And, of course, I feel "safer" using this product when I will be picking veggies from that plant the next day. I keep it close at hand, outside near the biggest garden and in a shaded spot by the water faucet--so I have it right there when I need it--no excuses for letting those bad insects live an extra moment!
I was originally surprised by the price for this particular bottle--then I realized it was a larger bottle than I usually find available to buy. So double-check the size before you criticize the price. 'Cause you can under-estimate the size from looking at the picture here.

Works better than any support that I have used. I wish that they offered more cross braces for sale as a separate item. My tomato plants are at the full height and 9 cross braces were not enough, I had to buy some more supports and rob the cross braces.
