I love the size, with the bowl over 2 feet wide. I also like the swivel feet because they help to get it firmly situated. The spark guard and cover are really great accessories.
The description says it's great for camping or tailgating. I think it would be! But I do want to mention it's not particularly portable. Being cast iron, it's on the heavy side--over 30 pounds.
This fire pit has been a wonderful addition to our yard and has become the centerpiece of evening get-togethers.
So glad I got it!

So far so good on this thing. After reading other reviews I'm a little worried about rust... I have a porcelain fire pit that's been outside in all weather for years and still looks great so this one being cast iron makes me nervous. You CAN get high temperature protective coatings for cast iron but so far mine has not shown a spec of rust, so we'll see if that's something I need to try later or not. [update: after being in the rain under the provided cover for many days, there's still no rust. I'm pretty sure it's already got a protective paint on it.]
Calling this portable is a bit of a marketing gimmick in my opinion... it's still nearly 40 pounds and has no handles so the fact that you aren't prevented from moving it counts as "portable", I guess. It IS more portable than my porcelain firepit so I guess you win THIS time, CobraCo, but yeah, it's not exactly something you'd take camping unless you intend to camp within short distance of your truck.
Anyway, assembly was easy, the thing looks and feels sturdy and so far its been a success. I'll update this review if rust becomes a problem.

Exceptionally lightweight and I think it has an interesting design for portability. Assembly took me less than five minutes to put together came with 3 bolts and one wrench. The packaging was very well put together, as well. The instructions were very simple and easy to follow, which only took three steps, attached the three legs to the bowl with the sturdy bolts. The legs attach very easily and feel very stout. The legs of the fire pit hold up the bowl. The log grate isn’t built in like many other fire pits, instead it sits in the middle of the bowl. This makes it easier to remove and clean. The log grate is extremely important; its function is to improve the airflow. The bowl is a bit shallow, but is able to handle 3-4 logs without trouble.
The stainless steel legs are a really nice touch; it gives the fit pit a modernized look. The bowl is very big and roomy; I didn’t think so at fist when I saw the image. When the top cover is on it stands up to an adults thighs. The cover makes it really safe so children do not get to close to the fire. An ideal location for this pit would be in the lawn or patio area, it really catches the eye and entertains guests. The pit is very durable and can be used for many years as long as it’s well kept. It did come with a cover, which I felt was not good in quality, but as long as it keeps the rain out I’m happy. The pit itself is very light weight 30 pounds, which makes it easy to travel with and move around. I don’t see why a person could not take this on a camping/out door trip, the legs attach and detach quite easy. It would have been nice if it came with a grate for grilling, because there is enough space between the log grate and the top of the pit.
Overall all I am pleased about the value of this fire pit and its functionality. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for an affordable fire pit. I can’t wait for a cool summer night to light up a fire and roast some marshmallows.

I have wanted a fire pit for a long time, but it never quite made it to the top of my list of MUST HAVES. Finally I had the opportunity to try the CobraCo Cast Iron Fire Pit FBCISTEEL. Now, I have to admit that conditions have been far from ideal. The weather has been mostly quite warm, and I do not have my "chosen spot" prepared for perfect fire pit enjoyment. For reviewing purposes, however, I had to take the first opportunity I had to try it out, at the very least.
First I want to say that it is easily assembled and is very sturdy. Also, it is quite attractive in a simple, durable sort of way. I rummaged through my pile wood, provided to me by mother nature over the past months, during some very windy storms. I found enough dry wood and some newspaper and was ready to get started. Since I did not have the time or to be honest the mood to spend hours gazing into the fire on that particular night, I made sure the fire was a small one, and settled in with my (very disinterested) dog to look at fire.
Although the timeng was not perfect, I have to say that the short time we spent was relaxing and left me looking forward to having one of those perfect evenings with a fire, and perhaps a friend or two, or maybe a book ( more likely) and my dog, for some quality, relaxing fire time. I am very happy to have had the opportunity to use and review the CobraCo Cast Iron Fire Pit FBCISTEEL. It promises hours of pleasure in the days to come.

You will not have a hard time putting this together. It looks great and the cast iron is solid. I am not sure how I feel about the chrome legs. I have another fire pit made of sheet steel and it cost a lot less, but his cast iron model is worth the difference in price.

This is such a well-made fire pit. The cast iron gives it heaviness without being difficult for me to lift. Putting it together was easy - and I am not really good with assembling things. All of the tools and pieces were there and the assembly instructions were easy to understand. The simple looks are very attractive and I appreciated that it has a cover. My last fire pit did not have one and it rusted quickly sitting out in the elements. I am looking forward to this one lasting a long time and staying beautiful.

In real life this looks less like a lunar lander or three legged milking stool. The black bowl is a beautiful flat black that looks like slate. When viewed from above, sitting down or standing, the legs hide behind the bowl and don't look nearly as chunky as I imagined. The fire pit is kind of small, two standard length logs side by side just fit in the bowl - there isn't a lot of extra space. If you'd rather not use wood, a standard composite Duraflame fits and works perfectly (this is actually the ideal fuel to use in the pit).
Assembly wasn't too difficult. The stainless steel legs attach with the supplied bolts. There is a flat steel wrench included. The spark arrestor cover's handle has to be bolted on, the included wrench does not fit that bolt - hand tight is probably good enough for that handle. The vinyl cover fits nicely and has elastic at the bottom so it won't blow off even in high winds. Of course you put that cover on long after the fire pit has cooled down.
The whole pit is not too heavy, around 25 pounds, so one person can carry it. The feet are unique; they have a spring suspension that automatically levels the pit. The teeth in the bottom dig into the ground and make the pit really stable.
I was surprised at how good this looks on a patio or in the yard. This isn't intended for bonfires; it is best at small intimate fires for two to four people hanging out on a cool evening.

I love fire pits and have purchased several over the years. Usually they are made of thin sheet metal and eventually fall apart. I don't think that this pit will suffer that fate, at least not for a long while. The bowl is cast iron and bigger than I imagined it to be. The legs are made of stainless steel and attached easily and securely. The grate fits in nicely and the lid keeps sparks from drifting away and possibly causing a wild fire.
This brings up an important point. When I was a young boy we used to go camping quite often. One of the mainstays of our camping site was an open outdoor fire pit. However, with much of the country suffering from drought it is important to keep fires controlled. I could see using this fire pit on a camping trip instead of using an open pit since the embers are kept contained by the screen covered lid. All in all a well made product that is worth it's price.

This is a very good quality fire pit with a more modern design than many others out there. It's hefty but still portable. The self leveling feet help in rocky terrain.

This is a great firepit. I love that it's portable and can be moved around my backyard. Depending on the time of year, there are some spots that are better than others and I like being able to relocate it on a whim.
The pit was super easy to build and seems to be of high quality. I like the modern "Crate & Barrel" look of it and it matches my steel patio furniture well.
Another thing I like about this pit, and other non-gas pits in general, is that you can roast marshmallows and hot dogs on it properly. With a gas pit, you really have to be careful or you're sure to catch your food on fire. This one, like a campfire, is perfect when you allow the logs to go down to a glow and then start in with the cooking... perfect every time!

Nice fire pit for the backyard or to take camping. This fit pit was very easy to assemble. It took only 10 minutes and a 10 year old boy did most of it. It is very light which makes it easy to transport if you wanted to take to the beach or camping. 3 pieces of firewood fit nicely inside of it, though I do wish the pit was a little deeper. The outside rim does get warm, but not hot, which is great if you have kids around it. The edge of the rim is very thin and did scratch my leg when I bumped up against it.
Instruction says to add 1 inch of sand to the bottom. With the sand it was not as easy to clean by just lifting and dumping the ash, as the listing states. It also came with a handled hook that you use to lift the cover off. This is not listed in the contents. It is great to have as the handle of the cover gets extremely hot. The vinyl cover is a nice addition too. Overall a great unit but overpriced for a simple and none decorative piece.
Amazon ReviewJuly 17, 2014
This is a nice, smaller fire pit. Although there are no assembly directions, it is made of cast iron (the bowl only), and has a nice, substantial leg system that holds it securely. It is made in China, in case you'd like to know that. Anyway, it does come with a cover so, as it has been my experience, you need to use it if you're storing this outside. That cast iron usually rusts through within about a year-and-a-half, and the cover extends that to about 2.5 years. I am storing ours inside from now on as a result.
Anyway, this guy has a pretty shallow, small bowl, about the right size to cook a small bit of hamburgers or hot dogs, but if you're looking for a larger fire that will last the evening, you'll be adding firewood frequently. I still prefer our other one better - you can load a ton of wood (well, almost!) in it and it just burns forever. This is nice if you just want a short fire for s'mores or for a chilly fall evening.
Overall, it's nice, but if you're looking for something to take camping, you'll probably want to look elsewhere - this guy is pretty small and shallow and well, if you're going hunting with the guys over the weekend, they'd probably laugh at this. It's just super modern looking with that black bowl and bright stainless steels legs. Kind of resembles the planet Saturn, on legs....

Very adequate fire pit, but the price feels rather high for what you get. We found it it to be sturdy and stable on our patio. It's a smaller fire pit (about 28" in diameter) than the other fire pits we have, but is good for smaller spaces. The fact that it is cast iron makes us feel better about roasting food over the fire compared to fire pits with copper bowls. But is also means it could rust more easily. We'll update the review with more use to see how it holds up. For now, a solid four stars.

Wow. When I requested this CobraCo Cast Iron Fire Pit, I thought I would receive a fire pit suitable for backpacing hikers. The only way to get this fire pit into the back country is by loading it on a pack mule! On the other hand, if you are looking for a top-of-the-line fire pit to take in your car or with your camper, this is a perfect fit.
The cast iron body is well constructed and thick enough to radiate the heat evenly. The fire grate fits snugly on the cast lip about two inches from the bottom of the bowl. Suggested fuels sources are wood, manufactured fire logs and charcoal. The spark guard is also heavy. It fits about half an inch inside the top of the bowl. No sudden wind gust will blow this screen off the fire pit. The three legs are stainless steel with ball joints connecting to adjustable feet. These are 2" diameter - sturdy - legs that attach to the body with bolts.
The fire pit was easy to assemble. A small crescent wrench is included. The only other tool we used was a pair of pliers. For the most part, the instructions were clear. Use and mantenance instructions were a little confusing. For even heat distribution, the instructions suggested adding a layer of sand. For beach use, that's not a problem, otherwise, you might need to purchase sand. The instructions also include the recommendation to clean the fire pit after each use. This is certainly wise, since old ashes insulate the bootom of the fire pit and would not allow even heat distribution. However, if sand is used, then new sand would be required after each fire. Not a bg problem, but something to be aware of.
The only puzzle to the fire pit is the purpose of two holes pre-drilled into the outer lip. They are about 45 derees apart and serve no pratical purpose, unless they are meant to be used to hang up the fire pit when not in use. That's just our best guess.
It's 100 degrees here, right now, so this fire pit will not see any use in the near future. But we'll light it up on the first cool night of the year.I can hardly wait.

Packaging was good and kept the fire pit safe and without damage during transit. Assembly was straightforward and quick. It only took about 10 minutes to open the box and have it fully assembled. The firepit is of average build quality. The basin is coated in a matte black fire paint that seems to be of only marginal quality. As you touch the basin, dust or residue comes off on your hand. This could also be indicative of just a lack of cleanup as the unit was manufactured. Visually, the unit is modern looking with simple, clean lines. The contrast between the matte black basin and the almost chrome finish of the legs is very nice. The basin is not real deep. I would estimate it could handle approximately three medium sized logs at most. Overall, this is a very functional and nice looking firepit. With the included screen top and poker tool you will have everything you need for a nice fire.

Solid product except that the cast iron bowl is fragile and can be broken during shipping as mine was. That is the nature of cast iron. If they could somehow make it less brittle, this would be a 5 star product.

- Easy assembly. Comes with everything you need to put it together. It was up and functional within a few minutes. - Durability: I waited a month or so before reviewing this product to see how it held up to the "elements." While there has been no rain where I live, there is a lot of fog/moisture from the beach which causes things to rust up pretty quickly. So far, the fire pit, which has remained outside day and night, has remained rust-free. I will update if this changes. - "Self-Adjusting" feet. I use the pit on the grass so having the fire pit level itself out is a huge plus. I have another fixture in my backyard and I had to lay a few pieces of flagstone on top of sand to level it out. It is always shifting and is a total pain. I appreciate these feet so much! - Plastic cover. The plastic cover is exactly like a large shower cap. It has elastic that keeps it on even in wind. I appreciate the inclusion of this so water doesn't get into the pit and sit there causing problems.
Cons: - Mesh screen is not a good fit for the top of the fire pit. Takes a lot of manipulation/jiggling to get it to sit on there somewhat straight (though never even close to correct or all that straight). Not such a big deal when the fire pit is cool but once the fire starts going, it is impossible. - The industrial look of cast iron mixed with steel legs (somehow reminds me of car parts) gives off a "manly-I-made-it-myself" vibe. While good for some outdoor spaces, not exactly what I pictured for my yard. The look is more practical rather than decorative. The bachelor pad of fire pits. May not be a con for those who like that look but it did not give off this presence online as much as it does in person.
Neutral: - Small size. The fire pit doesn't allow for much wood which is fine if you are looking for some s'mores cooking, hot dog roasting or a small "conversation piece" to sit around. This allows it to be portable (though a bit on the heavy side) so you can take it to the beach, camping or tailgating. For a permanent fixture in the backyard, you may want to go for something larger if you are planning on spending a long evening around it.
The fire pit would be a 4.5 star product if the mesh screen fit well. The fact that it is like playing Jenga with fire just to get it the screen on somewhat straight made it drop to a 3 star product. While everyone's taste is different, I did not deduct stars for "the look."
