The Best trap ever ! keeps your catch alive until needed.I Love chip muck stew and when it gets chilly my chipmunk moccasins are all the rage.
Great product! Very effective. July 09, 2012
I bought this product just recently and every time I set it up I catch a chipmunk (7 so far). Simply placed some sunflower seeds in it and worked like a charm. Thanks
Very Pleased June 22, 2012
I bought a Havahart trap and put a 1 1/2 inch piece of bacon in the bait area shortly before bedtime. By lunch the next day, I had a chipmunk IN the trap. So glad - excellent!!
Great Product! June 22, 2012
I had a chipmunk problem so I bought this product. Within 5 hours, I had caught 7 chipmunks and relocated them several miles away. This is a great product.
Wonderful & lasts for years April 26, 2012
This is the trap that my parents have always had, for as long as I can remember. I'm 25 and I'm pretty sure they had this thing before I was born. Either way, this is the only trap that they will ever use, as will I since I've had to borrow it from them from time to time. It's easy to set up, works great, and the little furbits are safe from injuries. It's more than worth the investment, and at some point I will be getting my own.
Works very well March 31, 2012
I tried another brand of live mouse trap (Little Pete's) and caught nothing in two months. With this trap, I have caught seven mice within half that time. Other traps are often designed to tilt the moment the mouse steps on them, and I suspect that my mice bolt away the second they feel motion. This trap doesn't have a moving piece until they reach the center of the trap, and by then it is too late for them to run away. True, it's more difficult to set than many other traps, but the extra work is well worth it --it's designed very well to catch even the quickest and most hesitant mice.
Worth it March 26, 2012
I live in the woods, so mice are inevitable. I can't stand to kill them, so this trap is wonderful. I've caught at least a dozen over the winter. It's a pain to take them for a ride in the car afterwards, but relocation is better than death! Thank you for giving me an alternative to the standard mouse trap.
Works great for mice & mouse-sized critters March 25, 2012
I have trapped several mice and one shrew with this kind of trap. It works wonderfully and keeps them secure during transport to a wild area.
Best way to relocate critters if you must November 21, 2011
Reviewer: Animal Lover
Trying to keep little critters out because relocating them is traumatic for them and makes them vulnerable. If you must relocate them these Havahart traps are the best. They work well and don't harm little animals. Be patient, some animals will take a while to venture in. The two-door traps work best for this reason. Animals are more likely to venture into a tunnel than an enclosure. Please be kind to the other inhabitants of our planet.
perfect November 16, 2011
This is a perfect mouse / vole trap. We use it to trap critters hiding in our back yard shed. This year for example, I have gotten a deer mouse every morning for the past 6 days. (Seems we have a few in there!). Peanut butter works great as bait.
The trap is easy to set, and it seems, easy to trigger even by a mouse. The bait tray only needs to rotate a tiny bit and the doors drop closed and lock - its pure genius. Double entry means the animal feels safe entering the trap as it sees 2 exits. We have used it perhaps for 10 years now and it always works.

I am using for chipmunk trap. I think it works.
Cruelty-free! Yippee! July 18, 2011
THANK YOU Havahart! I used your trap to catch & release 8 sweet little mice this winter. One after another they just kept getting caught. We released them in the same spot under a log in the woods. Hope they're ok. Good karma for all.
It Works! July 13, 2011
At 9 o'clock this morning I set the trap with peanut butter and a little dry oatmeal on top. At 4:30 pm the mouse was caught. I took him outside and let him go where he scampered away. Good job Havahart!
great for voles - use dried apples as bait! May 15, 2011
I had the trap out for a week with no luck, and I was getting discouraged. I tried: peanut butter, bread, peanut butter on bread, oats... then I tried pieces of dried apples and caught 3 voles and one mouse in 1 day. Caught 9 voles and 2 mice in a week. It's a very sensitive trap - a little difficult to set, but it is darn effective. I tried setting it up different ways and found it worked best to set it coming right out of one of the vole holes (about ping-pong diameter hole with the grass grazed in front of it). Very pleased and grateful for this product.
best trap ever January 29, 2011
I toss a few sunflower seeds in, and presto, I've got a mouse. Have had it for decades. Cheaper in the long run than poison or snap traps, and it's always ready for use. We enjoy chipmunks, but don't want mice in the kitchen. Trouble free, maintenance free, and very sensitive. Works perfectly.
mouse trap November 30, 2010
This is the only live trap I've ever caught mice with, been using the trap for 15 years, in 5 different houses, each time I have any signs of rodents out comes this trap and out goes a mouse from my house.
Ultimate trap for live catch mouse traps November 22, 2010
I have had huge success with this trap. I have tried a lot of mouse traps the Havahart is by far the best. First I thought the multiple catch traps would be perfect...how wrong I was. First I purchased the trap that "flips" the mouse into a holding area. I think this type of trap should halt to exsist. It kills mice. It may sweep some into the hold, it also can and does trap them between the sweep and the metal and kills them, not a pretty sight. The other "mutiple catch traps where the mouse enters into a chamber passing into a holding area does not work well either. Mice are smart and figure out how to get out the same way they got in. Save your money and buy the Havahart single mouse trap... it is 100% successful. Believe me & learn from my mistakes. Sad to say I have wasted a lot of money on live traps that do not work. With the Havahart I have finally found a great trap.
Thank you Havahart, Deb

Caught 10 mice already in 10 days. 1 each nite. Setting the trip lever is touchy but it has to be very sensitive for the small rodents. Peanut butter & sunflower seeds for bait works good.
Worked in 2 hours! Great product! Canceled the exterminator appointment! May 30, 2010
This is a great product and a big money-saver over calling in an exterminator. Alvin the chipmunk was running around our two car garage and would NOT leave even with both doors open and me chasing him with a broom. I bought this trap and baited it with a slice of apple and within two hours, Alvin was trapped. I released him into the woods half a mile away. I will be re-setting the trap in case he had any friends. I suggest that the drawings on the instructions be enlarged to show how to set the trap. I'm planning on buying Ridder Critter to keep the little darlings away from the garage and from their old nesting holes in the backyard.
Don't buy this if you have children... April 28, 2010
...once your kids see how cute the little critters are up close (and alive), they'll be begging to keep one as a pet.
I've lost count of how many mouse lives this trap has saved over the years. Peanut butter on a bit of bread crust does the trick.
The only thing that would make this trap better is if there was an option for a wireless gizmo that would give a remote indication that it had sprung. Like if you set a trap in a parked RV and can't check it everyday.
Caught Too Many To Count! March 17, 2010
Great product! Had to order more! I bait mine with a dab of peanut butter, and a bit of pineapple on top. Or peanut butter, with a bit of granola bar on top. Both work. The peanut butter acts as s glue to hold the other things on the bait tray.
Superb Live Catch Mouse Trap February 02, 2010
This trap is great at catching mice, or anything that goes in it that is not too small to get out. In it I have caught numerous mice, several sparrows, and even a few camel crickets!
This trap's sensitivity is amazing. This trap is a must have for any pest controller.

Use the model 1020 for mice November 21, 2009
Several small mice came in with something I brought in from the garage. I used one of the small plastic pivot live traps to catch the first little guy, but the second was not going for it.
I got a model 1020 and within a day and half had little guy #2 back outside. None the worse for the wear.
Thank you Havahart!
!!!I LOVE THIS TRAP!!! November 21, 2009
Reviewer: Animal Lover
I definitely recommend this product! This is my first experience ever having a mouse in my house. I was a little freaked out, but I knew I didn't want to kill the poor thing just because it wanted a nice, warm place to live!
I researched many live traps, and this one had the best reviews. Well, we caught our mouse the very first night we used the Havahart! I set it up last night using peanut butter as bait, thinking it would take a few days to catch the mouse, but this morning, our little visitor was right in the trap!
We left the mouse right in the trap and drove to a nice field, not close to any homes, where we opened the trap door and it scampered off. This was definitely the most humane way to deal with this problem.
I'm very glad I got the Havahart!
Only live trap that works November 17, 2009
I have tried bunches of live mouse traps before and this is the only one that works every time. I can't recommend it enough!
Setting Critters Free October 22, 2009
I love your traps. I have a small one for chipmunks and a large one for raccoons.
One small problem...I live in country and constantly see folks bring out the pests they catch in town and release them out where where they now become the problem of the country folks.
Doesn't seem right, fair, or humane for the critters. They are just transferring their problem to us. Bet they never thought about that.
Best of the Best October 10, 2009
I live in the country where the mice play year round and somehow find a passage into my house. For ten years I have had to keep traps around the basement to export the little pests from my abode.
I have become "professional" at trapping the miniature varmits and have used every type of traps sold at the major hardware big box stores. Nothing works as well as these double doored Haveahart traps. The "count" is overwhelmingly in favor of these traps even when compared to the more expensive traps sold by professionals. The little mice love these traps.
Immigrant Chipmunks June 05, 2009
Reviewer: Rusty Honda
I have used both the XS and Small traps to capture chipmunks and squirrels. The traps are very solidly made and one the animal is in there you not have to worry about escape if the trap is sized for the animal inside.
I used to release chipmunks (about 15-20) in a park about 5-6 miles away and noted that at the end of the season when I dropped off my last chipmunk that there were 15 or so in a clearing running in all directions. The tagged squirrel I dropped off near work (30 mins away) I still see from time to time looking for seeds near the building.
I feel these traps are hands down the most humane way to relocate the animals without harm to them or myself especially if you find a spot where the animal has a fighting chance of surviving. I now search out different remote wooded places to relocate animals.
Works great! December 04, 2008
I bought three types of traps and this was the best! I then bought 5 more of Havahart for a total of six and I caught a mouse in each one the very first night!
Wouldn't use any other kind October 04, 2008
I've used this trap in the past and it worked perfectly! I relocated two mice that had moved into my exterior water heater closet.
Glue traps "snapping" traps, and poison are cruel (the poison is dangerous to your pets too) and with this humane trap alternative- those other options are completely unnecessary. So for me, this is the best way to do it.
Once I checked my trap and it had a mouse in it, I put the trap with mouse into a large paper bag so that in transit I wouldn't have to see it, it wouldn't see me, and if it peed or pooped- it wouldn't get in my car.
Update from July review August 12, 2008
Reviewer: Home Owner With Large Yard
Just thought I'd update my previous comments....I have now removed 25 chipmunks and one mouse from my yard in the last few months. 20 were caught with this trap using sunflower seeds for bait. (A few seeds near each open end and a small pile on the bait tray).
I stopped the larger chipmunks from escaping by placing a stone on top of the trap when I set it, to weigh it down...now they can't shake it open or flip it over.
This thing works like a charm. I also caught a few using a another brand trap designed to catch multiple chipmunks...a "repeater" with two spring doors. It does not work as well as the Havahart because the chipmunks have to push the door up to get in...so they are more cautious. Also if you bait with too many sunflower seeds the squirrels come and scare away the chipmunks.
The repeater trap cost 3X more than the Havahart and didn't work as well. I should have bought a 2nd Havahart instead.

We have a rodent business, so we constantly have little critters running around. With the live traps, we can catch them and see if it is an escapee that needs to be returned to its cage or a wild one that needs to be taken away. This safeguards our breeding stock and keeps us from getting an out-of-control infestation.
Love it when it works. September 23, 2012
I've got a mouse problem in my house, tried the small plastic release traps, but all the bigger mice just took the bait and left, I just purchased this trap at fleet farm, and even though it's pretty tricky to get the hang of of, caught 2 mice the first night, I was happy as I could be, but now it failed twice today, the bait was gone, trap wasn't sprung. I've got it set the same way as far as I can tell,is there a trick as to how far out the rods are supposed to be. I tested it with a toothpick and it sprung, but when I left it set, I came home and again, it was open, unsprung and the bait was gone. If I could get it to work each time, I'd be giving it a 5 instead of a 4. And are the sides of the trap supposed to be completely straight up and down, mine seems to be slightly slanted inward on one side, could it be bent?
RESPONSE FROM HAVAHART
SEPTEMBER 21, 2012
Thank you for taking the time to submit your online review of the Havahart® Xsmall 2-Door Trap (model 1020). We appreciate your feedback and are happy to hear that this trap worked so quickly for you.
Where are you placing the bait in the trap? What can sometimes happen with these traps is that if the animal can reach the bait without being fully inside the traps, the animals hindquarters can block the trap from locking shut, allowing the animal to back out of the trap. To prevent this from happening, you may want to try setting this trap as a one door trap and placing the bait past the trigger plate in the back of the trap. This will help ensure that the mouse is fully inside the trap when it closes.
The sides should not be bent. Unfortunately the traps can sometimes be damaged in shipping; this may have been the case with the trap that you purchased. We would like to learn more about your experience and offer additional assistance to ensure that your trap is functioning properly.

Great, but instructions a little difficult for the spatially challenged :) August 28, 2011
Within 6 hours of setting this trap under my sink, I had caught my first mouse. However, I am a little bit "spatially challenged" and had trouble setting the trap for the second mouse. So the next mousie got a free meal. I'm not entirely sure what I did wrong, but when I checked it the morning bait pan was angled down but the trap hadn't triggered.
Once I downloaded the PDF instructions from this website I could see much better what I was supposed to do since I could zoom in on the diagram, so I am confident I will have another mouse soon. I'm giving this four stars instead of five since the illustrations in the included instructions are too small.. I also wish that online there were actual pictures (or higher resolution diagrams) of the trap in it's "ready" state. Even the PDF is fuzzy if you zoom in and there's no reason for that... People who are better at reading instructions than me should have no problem, however. :)
To Difficult Reviewer February 21, 2011
Reviewer: Can Be Difficult
I agree the trap can be a task until one gets used to it. They could make the illustration bigger and just show how the latch from the feed tray holds the latch from the door moving rods. First, put some peanut butter on a piece of bread and put the bread side down (dry side) on a long spoon. Open the doors, reach in with the spoon and turn it over onto the food tray, the peanut butter will stick to the food tray and make things easier for you. Flip the two door holders outward. A - Have the rod latches facing you and slide the two metal rods down. B - While holding the rods down, flip the door latches inward where they will be when the trap operates. (continue to hold the rods down) C - Reach over to the backside of the trap and push the rod that holds the food tray toward you. (note:the trick is to line up the 90 degree angle of the food tray rod with the end of the rod that controls the two pieces of rod that control the doors)D - As you continue to hold the door rods down, use your left thumb to rotate the rod from the food tray until it meets and is behind the door rod end. Do this from the bottom and rotate it clockwise with your left thumb.
Practice the steps a few times before you set the trap. If they made the rod that holds the food tray so it would not slide back and forth it would be easier to set.
Remember, the trap has to be sensative to work. Good luck.

I've been making mousetraps since I was little, and have always admired the design of the classic Havahart two door mouse trap! Glad to see they're still available.
Caught 8 mice in 8 nights when I recently deployed it in our Harlem apartment. Usually within 10 minutes of lights out!
CHIPMUNKS ALIVE ? January 01, 2009
Okay...these traps are very very good...but there are additional facts that must be told and known by those who intend to do this:
FIRST, it is imperative to weigh down the traps from the top so they are not tipped over by frightened critters.
SECOND, it is imperative to place the trap on something solid like a spare wood plank, as entrapped critter will reach out and frantically dig into the dirt that may surround them, bringing the dirt into the trap and causing a major mess.
THIRD, and perhaps MOST IMPORTANT is the fact that CHIPMUNKS MUST be carted MORE THAN FIVE MILES AWAY as they will do ANYTHING to find their way home.
FOURTH, is the fact that CHIPMUNKS will do ANYTHING to find their way home even if they are carted away TEN miles ! They will DIE in the process of returning home as they are NOT known to succeed at better than a FIVE MILE distance.
FIFTH, is the fact that most CHIPMUNKS will die of heart failure if left entrapped for approximately THREE HOURS !!!
SIXTH to know is therefore, there is NO kind way to capture and release these little fellas...they will either return or die trying...so ???
What can we do to rid ourselves of them without feeling guilty about having killed these cute little flea infested germ carrying pests? Knowing all the details about CHIPMUNK behaviour makes trapping them alive FAR more cruel than sending them back to God as quickly as possible, which I haven't yet done...but am seriously considering; after all, who's in charge over the animals?
Great product. October 04, 2008
Works well. Took about a week to catch my baby pet rat that got loose though. For some reason when I had both doors open she could easily run through it. The doors would close without her in it. It worked like a charm when I only had one door open. Now she's safe and sound with the rest of her friends.
Very Good Trap July 11, 2008
Reviewer: Home Owner With Large Yard
I have an older model of this trap (same design & dimensions, but sides are screen wire mesh). We always had a few chipmunks in our yard (no problem - thought they were cute), until we had a big outbreak this spring. The chipmunks were everywhere....lots of damage to vegetation and holes in the beds from digging.
I caught 13 chipmunks using this trap with sunflower seeds for bait (off & on for two months). They are about 80% gone now. The trap is easy to bait and the chipmunks go right in. Sometimes I trapped them in under 5 minutes, three a day. I would give this 5 stars except that (for my use), I found some of the larger more aggressive chipmunks will escape. They bang around inside, and they are able to pop the door open. One chipmunk flipped my trap upside down and escaped.
It looks like this new model trap may be heavier than mine...so maybe less of an issue? Mine is well made ...seems good as new. So I would go with this trap or the next size larger. Also if you have a lot of chipmunks, think about getting more than one trap, so you can catch a few at a time ....not so many trips to the woods to release them.
Triggers to sensitive June 30, 2012
I bought four traps and it's almost impossible to bait and set the trap without them tripping. Many times I would find my traps tripped with nothing inside. I took a small hammer and slightly flattened the end of the loop trigger rod where it meets the bait pan trigger rod. This solved the sensitive tripping problem and now catching mice as expected. The larger traps have both these rods flattened and it seems this trap should also.

Thank you for submitting an online review for the Havahart® Xsmall 2-Door Trap (model 1020). We are sorry to hear that your traps were found to be difficult to set.
Setting this style of cage trap requires a balancing act between the end of the offset looped trigger rod and the bait ban trigger. Although this can seem tricky at first in most cases it takes several practice attempts of setting and tripping your trap to ensure you are setting properly.
You definitely should not have to modify the trap in any way to make it more effective. We would like the opportunity make this right and discuss this matter directly with you. Please contact our Consumer Relations Team at 1-855-5-HAVAHART (1-855-542-8242) so can better assist you.
I find that the Xsmall size trap listing to catch chipmunks is in correct. This trap is to small in size for anything but a mouse. First it is hard for an adult hand to position bait inside the trap as suggeested. Second chipmucks spring the trap door before fully entering inside. I spent two weeks resetting the doors and frighting chipmuncks away.

Thank you for taking the time to submit your online review of the Havahart® Xsmall 2-Door Trap (model 1020). We appreciate your feedback and have shared your comments with our Product Development Team.
If you are finding that the chipmunks are too large for this trap, you may want to try setting this trap up as a one door trap and placing the bait at the far end of it. This would cause the chipmunk to be fully inside the trap before the door closes, which should increase your success.
We hope this information helps. Please feel free to contact our Consumer Relations Team at 1-855-5-HAVAHART (1-855-542-8242) for additional assistance.

not very useful August 30, 2012
I have tried this trap for several months and have managed to catch only one squirrel. The trip is not sensitive enough and I had to devise many ways to get the critter to step on the trip and then try to reach up for the bait. By the time I figured it out, he was quite fat from all the purloined bait he managed to eat with impunity. This trap only works for adult, fat squirrels.
We hope this information has been helpful, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our Consumer Relations Team at 1-855-5-HAVAHART (1-855-542-8242).
