I bought this feeder last week at Home Depot thinking it was true to it's name... Squirrel Stumper. It is not true to its name. It took them a few days but they figured out if they hang by their feet they can eat the seeds. This past weekend we changed the hanger to a very small wire and thought for sure they wouldn't figure it out. It took a couple days but again they did it. I have seen them fall off a bunch of times while trying but not after eating seeds for awhile. Today I was lucky enough to snap a picture of the squirrel hanging by his feet... if you want to see a picture you can go to the review that i wrote on my website. http://www.curiousdaisy.com/wordpress/2012/03/perky-pet-squirrel-stumper/

Thank you for your online review! As you have experienced protecting your birdfeeder from squirrels can be an endless battle for many backyard birdfeeders like yourself. Using a caged feeder like the Perky-Pet® Squirrel Stumper is one way to protect your feeder from damage. You can also try spring loaded feeders like the Perky-Pet® Squirrel-Be-Gone™ Wild Bird Feeder (model 336). When squirrels attempt to feed from these feeders their weight will close the feeder ports.
To avoid these pests from accessing your feeder often times a more holistic approach is needed. Try hanging your feeder 10 feet from the nearest squirrel launching site and at least 5 feet off of the ground.
We hope you have found these tips helpful. If you have questions or need assistance please do not hesitate to contact our Consumer Relations Team at 1-855-PERKYPET (1-855-737-5973).
I bought this product around a month ago at home depot in-store for about ten bucks. it's hanging in the backyard off of a metal shepherd's hook garden stake, perhaps 3-4' from the fence, and thus far I haven't seen any squirrels on it. I'd chalk some of that up to the deterrent powers of my lightning-fast whippets, but I still get plenty of bunnies and chipmunks enjoying the banquet under the feeder, so maybe not. I bought a squirrel baffle at the same time, and haven't bothered to use it (planning on returning it, as it cost $5 more than the feeder).
this thing holds tons of seed and has 4 ports midway down the tube and another 4 at the base, so plenty of birds can feed at one time. the bottom of the metal outer cage is capped with a narrow metal dish, forming a saucer that a lot of the seed pools in - most birds seem to prefer picking out their fave seed type from the dish rather than the ports. the clinging birds do great with the cage, and the perching birds grip the edge of the dish fine, so everyone is happy. it's lightweight and the central tube is made of clear hard plastic, so I'm sure it will cloud up or crack in years to come, but it was ten whole dollars, so it's ok to think of it as a one- or two-season item.
it took about a week for any birds to find the feeder (never had one before), but there's enough birds there now that i keep binoculars by the back porch door because i need them non-stop. I'm using an "eastern regional seed blend", and today I've seen cardinals, white breasted nuthatches, 3 different sparrow types, siskins, house finches, and a tufted titmouse eating at this feeder. the house sparrows are messy, flinging seed out of that narrow metal dish, so I've also seen a chubby-cheeked chipmunk, more cardinals, and mourning doves foraging underneath it.

I originally purchased this feeder to help deter larger undesirable birds such as starlings and black birds. It does a fairly good job at it, as it's uncomfortable for them to cling onto this feeder. They get discouraged and don't stay on it for long. I don't get squirrels so I can't really comment on that aspect.
When I first put this feeder out, the birds had a learning curve with it. They couldn't figure it out, but now that they have, it's constantly used. My red bellied woodpecker loves this feeder. For a clinging bird, it's easy for them to hold onto and feed from. I like the seed capacity of this feeder. It holds enough seed to let it go for a few days without having to refill. The design also discourages picky birds to sift and dump unwanted seed as seen in tray/troth feeders.

I like it, but it got knocked down, by squirrels or some other animal and the plastic liner is totally ruined. I need a replacement. Please advise. Thank you. MR

This feeder does not keep squirrels out. The seed comes out on a tray at the bottom and the squirrels can feed freely. Also the holes in the mesh that ssurround the seed tube are too big and they can reach through and get the seeds.

Dear Cathy,
Thank you for sharing your feedback on the Perky-Pet® Squirrel Stumper (model 114). We are sorry to hear you were not satisfied with this feeder. Please keep in mind the wire cage on the feeder is meant to prevent squirrel damage to the feeder.
To help prevent squirrels from raiding the seed in your feeder there are a few things we recommend. You may want to add a squirrel baffler to the feeder. A baffler can be placed above or below your feeder to prevent them from gaining access to your feeder. Perky-Pet® offers the Perky Pet® Metal Pole Squirrel Baffler.
Placement of your feeder can also play a factor in keeping squirrels off of your feeder. The feeder should be at least 4-5 feet above ground and 10 feet away from any thing that the squirrel can launch from.
