When I first opened the package, I wan't sure about this feeder. It wasn't as sturdy as I had hoped, but for the price, what did I expect?
Once I filled the feeder and placed it in my backyard, I found out just how great this feeder really is! The birds in my backyard LOVE this feeder. I have used this same seed in another feeder and the birds would visit a few times a day but now that it is in this feeder, they can't get enough. I have birds at the feeder every time I look out the window, throughout the whole day. A pair of cardinals has been visiting frequently, too. I have had a greater quantity of birds and a greater variety of birds than previously (with using the same seed in a different type of feeder).
The tray on the bottom seems to prevent more seed from falling to the ground and allows larger birds, such as cardinals, to feed. The perches are just right for small birds such as finches and sparrows. Birds such as starlings (which chase away nicer birds) don't seem to be attracted so much to this feeder, which is a plus.
The top opens easily to fill even while the feeder is still hanging. The wire hanger is sturdy and seems like it should hold up for a long while.
There are definitely nicer, more expensive feeders out there and those may be more suitable for an avid bird watcher. But for the casual bird watcher (like to have birds around when you look out the window) this is a reasonably priced, effective bird feeder.

I've used this feeder for about 8 or 9 years and it's great because its design partitions the seed into three levels automatically when you fill it from the top. The result is that all 12 feeding stations continue to have seed as the seeds are consumed. Most other feeders begin to deplete the uppper level ports, then the middle ones, and finally only the bottom ports have seed for the birds. With this feeder, each of the three levels individually are emptied out as the birds feed. Plus, holding 8 pounds of seed reduces the number of times it must be filled. There is no down side to this feeder, though one must remember it's heavy when full so hang it securely.
