Specifically attract Goldfinches into your yard--while keeping other birds at bay--with this patented Perky-Pet® Upside Down Goldfinch Feeder. Also known as the wild canary, the American Goldfinch is easily recognized by its bright yellow color, shiny black crown, and black-and-white wings and tail. Both handsome and distinguished, it's easy to see why this beloved little bird is proudly claimed as the state bird in three states.
VIP Dining for Goldfinches
Darling and acrobatic, Goldfinches have no problem feeding while perched upside down. This long, tube-shaped feeder caters to that unique ability, and Goldfinches specifically, by providing six patented Upside Down feeding stations with perches positioned above--versus below--each feeding port. Because other species aren't able to feed upside down, this feeder keeps less desirable house finches and larger birds away. With a feeding station all their own, Goldfinches can leisurely dine without being bothered by other birds.
This Upside Down Goldfinch feeder features a squirrel-resistant cap and perches made of durable plastic. The cap offers weather-resistant reliability--standing up to snow, sun, rain, and other outdoor elements, while its 18-inch feeder tube empties completely of seed, leaving behind no messy residue. This Upside Down Goldfinch feeder can hold up to 2 pounds of thistle seed or finch mix. When it's time to refill, simply slide the cap up along the hanging bail to access the feeder tube.
After filling this Upside Down Goldfinch feeder with thistle seed or finch mix, use the hanging bail to hang the feeder near a back deck, porch, patio, or a window overlooking a garden or landscaped area in your yard. Choose a location that not only provides a great view, but that is also Goldfinch friendly. Like most birds, Goldfinches prefer an open space, so they can easily move from one feeding port to the next. They also like to be in a location that gets both sun and partial shade during the day. An ideal location will be between 5 and 8 feet off the ground and within 15 feet of nearby coverage, like bushes and shrubs, so Goldfinches feel safe and protected from predators.
Cleaning the Feeder
The clear, plastic seed compartment makes it easy to monitor seed levels at a glance. Be sure to keep this Upside Down Goldfinch feeder clean and filled with fresh seed to ensure happy little birds and many return visits. Perky-Pet recommends checking this bird feeder once a week for insects or mold and cleaning it every few weeks with a mild soap and water solution.

Gold finches love it and they are fun to watch. I have two feeders and probably will get another shortly.

"Upside Down" feeders are used by gold finches. Other finches do not use the feeder because they don't like to hang upside down. This saves on that expensive Niger seed. Standard finch feeders will attract all finches, and that can get expensive (feed). Our other finches will use standard seed feeders, though they would love to get to the Niger seed :-)

This thistle feeder is offered at a remarkably fine price. It went together and filled easily and hangs now awaiting a flock of gold finches. It is such fun to watch them turn from the bright gold of their summer plumage to the tans of winter then back again come spring. The upside down feeding is also a marvel; and it is necessary where house finches also feed. Their boisterous numbers will commandeer any thistle feeder that allows them to feed normally. Upside down feeding is not one of their talents, which clears the way for the goldfinches. (House finches do perfectly well at the regular bird feeder.)

Feeder is a great feeder. Well worth the price. Works better than more expensive choices. I would recommend it to anyone.
Amazon Review, Finches love itSeptember 16, 2013
The goldfinches love it. We tried other metal feeders but the goldfinches aren't as attracted to it or ready to feed from it. The yellow cap helps a lot. I tried painting the other feeders but it still didn't work. The only other bird that can eat upside down from this feeder is the chickadee. None of the other birds can fit on the short posts. Sometimes the bottom will fall out if not careful, put a zip tie around it and haven't had any more issues.

I sold these for years. I also keep one in my back yard all the time. Recently I could not get them so I checked out amazon and there these were. These seem to be fairly priced so I went for it. Finch Birds prefer these feeders over any other finch feeders because finch like to eat upside down. Plus other birds don't like this feeder.

Amazon Review, Best Goldfinch feederAugust 01, 2013
We have 3 of these, and our finches love them! The sparrows (even tho they try) can not grip upside down to get to the holes where the thistle comes out (and thank goodness ours haven't "evolved" to the point where they can). Not one squirrel has ever messed with them (I do only use thistle). They have lasted for literally years, and I just couldn't ask for a better Goldfinch feeder. As for reading one review that said something about the plastic falling out of the bottom, I only had this happen once when the feeder was NOT filled and it popped right back in. I've never had it happen with a full or partially full feeder.

I love this feeder and have used it for years BUT...the squirrels are eating the perches! Wish they were made of sturdier stuff.

The Birdscapes® Patented Upside Down® Thistle Feeder (model #399) is designed to attract and feed goldfinches. Unfortunately as you have witnessed, unwanted squirrels are also attracted to the seed in your feeder. We find one of the best ways to prevent this is by adding a squirrel baffler. The Perky Pet® Transparent Squirrel Baffler (model #: 340) can be hung or pole mounted, blocking squirrels from gaining access to your feeder.
We are sorry to hear of your experience. Please keep in mind your feeder is covered by a one year warranty. Beyond that, parts such as The Perky-Pet® Perch (model #: 185620) are available for purchase.
