I tried it out in my sink with water. I looked over the parts and figured out how it worked. 1. Unscrew top. 2. PUSH container INTO red base until it snaps in place so nectar will stay in reservoir. 3. Fill reservoir to desired amount (2-3 days use). 4. Screw on top carefully (do not cross thread) to seal soft gasket to clear reservoir. 5. Hang 6. Pull down red reservoir to drain nectar into reservoir. 7. Voila!
Clean red reservoir by unscrewing the 2 clamshell halves. The clear reservoir unscrews off the red reservoir. After cleaning, I soak the parts in almost boiling water to sanitize. The smooth plastic parts are easy to clean and do not have corners for bacteria to hide.

We bought it in a local store. When we came home I found all this bad reviews and disappointed at first. This is a good product. Everyone who left a bad review just don't know how to use it right. It's easy. Try it with water first. Just do not open the top lid. Use another side to fill it with liquid. Close and turn over quickly.
Update We live in Maryland. Now in August we see a humming-bird on our balcony almost every day.

I agree with the reviewer who stated that the product could have clearer instructions on how to properly fill it. Like others, my sugar water came running out the first time I filled it. Fortunately, it was in the sink. Then I realized I needed to push the clear container down into the red bottom while I fill it. Only after the lid is in place can you pull the container out of the bottom. It works like a charm and the hummingbirds love it!
A plus to this feeder is that it is so easy to clean! The bottom section comes apart, making it easy to clean where the hummers feed. When the top is off and the clear container is removed from the base, it is very easy to clean.
Understand the proper way to fill the feeder and you should be pleased with it.

I looked up reviews for this product after I bought one, tried to fill it, and gasped at the sight of sugar water leaked all over my kitchen counters. At first glance, one might think this feeder was designed very poorly.
In reality, the proper way of using this product probably needs a bit more instruction than the little scrap of paper it came with. There are several reasons why other reviewers encountered excessive leaking.
Problem 1: You might not have all the pieces screwed on tight enough. The red base is made of a top and bottom, which screw apart. If these aren't screwed together all the way, then a vacuum can't form. Same with screwing the clear nectar holder onto the red base, or screwing the lid on top of the clear part. Creating a vacuum is essential to proper liquid dispensing.
Problem 2: You might not have pushed the clear part DOWN into the red base, which is its "closed" position. If these two pieces are screwed together, but you have the clear part pulled UP, then it's open, and as soon as you try to put nectar in it, the liquid will stream out of each of the four flowers like a pretty little fountain. You must have the clear part pushed down before filling.
Problem 3: You might not have put the lid on right away after filling. This is what I did. I'd made a sugar water concoction out of hot water and sugar, and thought it would be best to let it cool before putting the lid on. I left the feeder filled, with the lid off, and came back an hour later to find my kitchen deluged (and sticky!). It's imperative to put the lid back on top as soon as you fill the feeder with nectar, in order to create a proper vacuum, which helps regulate the amount of liquid dispensed.
After learning this the hard way, I first cooled my nectar in the fridge before filling the feeder, then tried it again, putting the lid on tightly right after filling the feeder, and then popping the clear part back "UP" to allow the liquid to flow to the flowers. No spilling! No fountains! Perfect vacuum created, no silicone sealer necessary.
I only give this product 4 stars, instead of 5, because using it is not intuitive, and also because one of the yellow flowers broke during shipping. I'm currently trying to contact the company that makes Perky Pet to see if they'll send me a replacement.
Edit: Well, the company wasn't able to help me fix just the yellow flower part, so they are actually sending me a replacement unit, free of charge. This is above and beyond my expectations. I think that their customer service levels alone deserve them an additional star. Thank you, Woodstream!
TRICKY TO OPERATE AT FIRST BUT WORKS GOOD August 15, 2011
Reviewer: Sylvester017
Never knew there was so much to learn about hummies until I bought a bunch of different feeder styles. The tube feeders had only one feed port and attracted way too many bees so stopped using them. The cheap strawberry model faded fast but our hummies don't care about colors so we still use it. The push-pull style kept leaking - it was tricky to operate at first because it kept leaking on me because I had to learn how to screw-unscrew the bottom, how to assemble-disassemble the push-pull base parts, learn not to be afraid of tightening the top to create a vacuum, and learn how to operate the push-pull technology. I also shook the bottle too hard making the base overfill and leak. After a couple cleanings and refills, I got the hang of it and the syrup doesn't drip out anymore. Our hummies aren't particular about what feeder to use out of 3 models we own but the push-pull feeder is my favorite so far to clean and use (it holds a good amount of syrup and by the 3rd day, it's depleted enough to clean and refill fresh again). Our hummies are increasing in numbers - need to order more feeders and try some ant guards!

This is my third Perky Pet feeder and the Hummingbirds least favorite. This feeder is always full of bugs/bees, as the holes must be too big. I do, however, like the top-fill, push-pull feature.

Dear Judy,
Thank you for your online review for the Perky Pet® Aster Top-Fill, Push-Pull Hummingbird Feeder (model 122TF). We are sorry to learn about your experience with this feeder and the trouble with the bees and other insects. We would like to offer you a suggestion for how to keep them away from the feeder. We recommend hanging another feeder with stronger nectar, a ratio of 1:2 works well. This will attract the bees to the other feeder and allow the hummingbirds to better enjoy their feeder.
We hope that you find this suggestion helpful! Please contact us at 1-855-PERKYPET (1-855-737-5973) with questions.
I love the look of the feeder and didn't have any problems filling it. However, after having it up for a few days, the feeder was swarming with bees. They drank all of the liquid within a week- it appears as though they are drinking it from the gap around the bottom. The hummingbirds will fly up to the feeder but won't land on it because of all the bees. I have had a different feeder in this location for years and never had trouble with bees.

Thank you for your online review for the Perky Pet® Aster Top-Fill, Push-Pull Hummingbird Feeder (model 122TF). We are sorry to learn about the trouble with the bees. We do have several feeders that include bee guards, including the Garden Song® Plastic Pinch Waist Hummingbird Feeder (model FF84) and the Perky-Pet® Pinch-Waist Glass Feeder (model 203CP).
You can also hang an additional feeder with a stronger nectar (mixed at a 1:2 ratio) to draw the bees away from your other feeders.
We hope that you find this suggestion helpful! Please contact us at 1-855-PERKYPET (1-855-737-5973) with questions.
i bought my second today as the hummers seem to like it. The only problem I have experienced is with securing the bottom part which is not so easy. If not, ou take a nectar bath when you hang it and pop it up. If you learn to do it it though a bit difficult, it is a wonderfully easy product to use via the top fill. Please do not use city tap water when making the nectar, bottled spring water etc. or captured rain water are what they deserve. Chlorine and flouride are toxic to them as they are to us. Treat them right, they come back or send kids back on and on and have their ways of thanking you...often could reach out and touch one doing that to me.

base sections do not seal properly August 17, 2012
Reviewer: leelee
I bought one of these last year and LOVE it. I bought another one this year and promptly returned it. The 2 pieces of the base just will not completely seal, so if the feeder gets tipped, it pours out around the middle of the base. I think perhaps the two pieces are made of slightly different material. When I returned the new one to the store, I looked at all the others they had, and none of them had bases that sealed completely either. This is a great design IF all the pieces seal. I have to bring my feeder inside each night so the raccoons can't drain it, so the push-pull seal is a great help on my older one.

Dear Leelee,
Thank you for your online review of the Perky Pet® Aster Top-Fill, Push-Pull Hummingbird Feeder (model B122TF). We are sorry to hear that you had difficulties with this feeder leaking. We appreciate your feedback and have passed your comments along to our Product Development Team.
The Push-Pull technology is similar to that of a sports drink bottle. It is essential to ensure that all the connecting pieces of the feeder are tightly sealed. Verify that the two base components are tightly screwed together. Then make sure you have the bottle tightly screwed into the base. You’ll notice that the words open and close are on the base of the bottle. It is important to push down on the feeder to close off the ports – you’ll hear a popping noise. Now you are ready to completely fill your feeder with nectar again making sure you screw the lid back on tight, this creates a vacuum seal that controls the nectar flow through the ports. Take the feeder to the place you want to hang it. Pull up on the bottle reservoir (you will hear a pop) to open the ports.
Above all we want to ensure that you are satisfied with your purchase. If you have completed these steps and are still experiencing leaking, please do not hesitate to contact our Consumer Relations Team at 1-855-PERKYPET (1-855-737-5973) so we can assist you.
I have four of these feeders and they all leak. One on the spouted nectar as soon as I filled it. I have tried to seal the bottom pieces together with silicon sealer and they still leak.

Tried 8 of them, they leaked and didn't like it August 04, 2012
Reviewer: Marilyn (KY)
Last Spring when I was in a local store, I saw these feeders and bought 2. Went home and did everything (push pull, tightly sealed)and they leaked out the base. It happened with 8 of them (had receipt and got 2 each time for 4 different trips to the store). Lost a lot of sugar water nectar with them. Not interested in this feeder anymore. Thought it was a great idea though. Did watch your video a few times.
Regarding the foam cleaning mop, I bought one at the store and it didn't take long (within a week) for it to become worthless. The foam strips didn't stay in the cluster that is shown in the photo above and are all hanging down and useless.

After reading other reviews I do not feel bad. I bought this feeder this year and have tried numerous times (testing with water after wasting nectar the 1st 2 times) and all times this feeder leaks. I have watched the video and carefully checked each area is sealed and still the liquid leaks out even pours out of the ports. I wish I would have saved my reciept, I would take it back. Very disapointed.

We've gone thru two of the push/pull feeders and all we got was a feeder that leaked all of its nector. We followed the directions, making sure everything was screwed on tight, pushing the container into the base to fill it and pulling up on the the containter to open the feeding ports. All it did was continue dripping to the ground until it was completely empty. Would not recommend this feeder to anyone.

This feeder is not to my liking at all. There was a problem with keeping the nectar in the bottle...no matter how well I followed the instructions, the nectar always leaked out. I tried closing the ports, opening the ports...nothing worked. The solution just does not stay in the bottle. I wasted half a gallon of nectar trying to get this container to work...thumbs down on this one!

I ordered two of these feeders because they were top fill and would be easy to clean and fill. Every time I fill them, even a little, they lost the liquid within hours. I finally figured out that they were leaking from the clamshell seam on the bottom. They are easy to clean, but I could never get them to stop leaking. The top was on securely and the vacuum seal appeared to work fine, but the clamshell parts could not be tightened completely to stop the leaking. Get the bottom fill, and use a funnel. These were a waste of time and money.

Dear Marcy,
Thank you for sharing your feedback regarding the Perky-Pet® Magnolia Push-Pull Hummingbird Feeder (model 120TFN). Hummingbirds are creatures of habit. They will come back to the same place year after year. If you already have an existing feeder we suggest replacing your new feeder with your established feeder. If this is your first hummingbird feeder, it may take them awhile until they realize you are offering a food source. Adding a hanging basket with red trumpet flowers nearby can also help to attract hummingbirds to your feeder.
