Product Features:
Multiple Correction Levels allows for customized training experience
Step by Step instructions for easy set up
Run-Through Protection keeps your dog contained while maintaining your dog's safety
Collar neck size up to 30 inches for multiple breed protection
How it Works:
The Fence Free In-Ground Dog Fence uses a combination of audible tone and/or corrective static stimulus to prevent the dog from exiting the fence boundary.
When your dog reaches the edge of the boundary, you will hear a warning tone that will last as long as the dog remains in the warning zone. If your dog walks away from the warning zone, the tone shuts off. If your dog continues to move towards the boundary, the initial low-level static correction occurs, encouraging your dog to remain in the boundary zone. If your dog still continues to move towards the boundary, the preset higher level of correction will be administered to attempt to prevent your dog from entering the boundary and into potential danger.
Multiple Correction Levels
The water-resistant collar receiver contains six levels of correction- Tone Only or Static Correction (5 levels) with Tone. You can set this level of correction to individually suit your dog. The first time your dog receives a correction, a normal reaction might be to yelp or jump because it was unexpected. Your dog learns where they are able and unable to go within the boundaries of your yard.
Works with Multiple Dogs
With the use of the Fence Free Extra Receiver Collar, your Fence Free Underground Pet Fence System can contain an unlimited number of dogs. Each collar can be set to its own correction level.
Easy to Setup
The wall-mount transmitter features an easy to set and easy to read control panel. The Power and Loop light offer constant confirmation that your fence is working properly.
You Control the Signal Width
On the transmitter you can also set the Signal Field Width. This is the area on each side of the wire that activates the warning tone and static stimulus level on the collar. There are 5 field width settings (from 3 ft - 24 ft) which you can adjust based on your yard size and temperament of your dog. The signal field is displayed digitally in the LED window.
Additional Safety Features
Run-Through Protection: When your dog runs towards the boundary, first a warning tone is emitted; if your dog continues towards the fence, the collar will emit another warning tone accompanied by a low level warning static stimulus; if your dog continues towards the boundary, he/she will receive the full level static stimulus that you have set. The factory default setting is the lowest level.
Over Correction Protection: If your dog becomes “trapped” or “confused” in the signal field, this feature limits stimulation. It does this by stopping the static stimulus after 10 seconds and not accepting any additional signal from the fence for 30 seconds; therefore stimulation of your pet is stopped. The collar will automatically revert to normal operation after this 30-second window.
Train your dog to play in your yard without the fear of the dog exiting the boundary with our Havahart® Fence Free Underground Dog Fence System. To ensure the maximum protection and freedom for your dog, please observe the following safety precautions:
Never leave the collar on your dog for more than 12 hours at one time. Pressure Necrosis is caused by extended pressure of the probes on the dog's skin, along with oil and direct that may accumulate on the probes. This can cause severe irritation of the dog's skin.
Check dogs daily for skin irritation and do not use the collar if the skin is irritated.
Only use the Havahart® Remote Trainer on healthy dogs, ages 6 months and older. Consult your veterinarian before using the collar if your dog has health problems.
Check collar fit each time you place collar on your dog – the collar must be fitted properly to work effectively. If the collar probes are not making complete contact with the dog's skin, the trainer will not work to its full effectiveness.
Always use the lowest stimulation possible to train your dog.

No problems with shipping or condition of product. It arrived within the stated time and the set up instructions were exactly as the seller described. I could not get my extremely social golden labrador to understand boundaries and I tried many training techniques and failed. I didn't want to put a "shock" collar on her. Finally I found this product which delivers a much milder notice that she is getting close to her boundaries. I followed the training instructions exactly and now I have a vivacious, sociable golden labrador that stays in her own yard. I chose the underground fence instead of the wire-free because I have steel siding on my home which interferes with the signal of the wirefree and we have many trees on our 2 acre lot.

Our dachshunds were always running into the neighbors yards when we'd let them out, so it was either take them both on a leash each time (which was very time consuming) or risk having the neighbors aggravated while we chased them through their yards (which was also time consuming).
We followed the instructions in the booklet and set up the flags with the system turned off and walked the dogs around the perimeter on a leash, explaining that these were "bad flags." Every time we took the dogs out, the older one got better about avoiding the "bad flags." When we finally turned the system on and used no leashes, the older dachshund decided to test the boundary and got zapped. That did it for her, she decided the flags were indeed bad and has done very well staying within the boundaries. The younger one, who is usually easier to train, is still having difficulty understanding why she gets a little shock when she gets too close to the flags. She doesn't cross them, but she seems to still be curious about them, gets too close and gets a little zap. I can hardly stand it! She doesn't yelp or cry, but you can see the muscles in her neck tense up. The older dog no longer goes near the flags at all.
I would say this product works very well and was surprised at how quickly the dogs caught on. It makes it so much easier when they have to go out!

I don't use this to keep the animals in the yard as much as I use it to keep them out of my workshop. In the summer, I like to work on projects in my shed where I might have wood shavings flying around, or sharp tools running. Because of this, I don't like having the animals or kids anywhere near me when I'm working for obvious safety reasons. With the kids, I can tell them to stay out, the dogs on the other hand, not so. With the fence, it prevents them from coming anywhere near the shed so I can work in peace. This is a great product.

Let me tell you the pros and cons of the "Havahart Fence Free Underground Dog Fence" .
Pros: 1. Simple instructions, Easy setup 2. Humane 3. Works fast
Cons: As for cons, there are none that I can really think of aside from the fact that if your yard is small and close to a road this system WILL NOT instantly stop your dog from running after cars and possibly getting hit until it learns the boundaries and stops (which can take anywhere from a day to a month depending on your dog).
Personally I love this... Once I set this up in my yard it only took a few days before my dog learned not to pass the boundaries, now she doesn't keep running off and getting all muddy and I don't have to give her a bath every day! YAY :)
Very Effective on a Stubborn Dog - Amazon Review August 18, 2012

Great fence that allowed me to train my dog. I own a basset hound which is very stubborn and likes to follow his nose. Installation was easy and we do not have to worry about him disappearing.

Train your dog to stay within the boundary that you create. Building a secure play and exercise area.
Training involves 3-4 sessions of ten to twenty minutes of each session. There's 4 steps for training and each step takes roughly three days, this does depend on the personality and breed of your dog. I have chosen to walk my dog on a leash as the first step for a week, thereby getting familiarized with the system.
You are able to choose between 5 levels of correction, including a "tone only correction." The other option is a shock, if you decide to use it. I have not. If you decide to use this, it has a safety shut-off feature.
It works by distance to the boundary line. As a dog wanders towards the boundary, he will hear a warning tone. As he steps closer to the boundary, he'll hear another tone with "low level correction."
There are five width settings from "3" to 24."
The package includes :
water resistant collar receiver
collar probes (2 sets for long & short haired dogs)
disposable lithium battery
wall mounted transmitter/control box with hardware (this unit has power & loop lights)
power transformer (AC adapter)
boundary wire
training flags and cards
1 year warranty
instruction manual
test light
The system includes everything that you'll need to enclose an area of up to 1/3 acre.
A dog lying still or relaxing will activate "sleep mode", saving the battery.
It trained my beagle in no time! Amazon Review July 07, 2012
Reviewer: Mage
Seriously, my beagle runs after anything! And not at a cute, lumbering speed like my Bernese Mt Dog. She BOLTS like she was shot out of a cannon, full-tilt, head up, tail down, like a maniac! We have resorted to putting her behind a baby gate if we are going to be in and out of the house a lot, because one little slip-up and ZOOM! She's out like a dart. Chasing anything that spurs her little hunting dog instinct. Anything from a dangerous postal carrier or speeding car breaking our subdivision's 25 mph by a mph or two....to a leaf blowing across HER yard or the scent of a neighbor two blocks away grilling their dinner. Yup, everything sets her off running!
Well, now she has her little collar on and because she is so smart, she only got too close to the flag/fence line three or four times. The collar emits a warning signal, letting her know she is getting close to where it will give her a static notice. The same day we put this on her, she has stayed clear of the fence line. Now, if she does get past us, into the yard, she doesn't even go full-tilt! As soon as she gets out, she is a little cautious, but still very enthusiastic! She goes out, and is alert, but not darting up the road. It's like she instantly became a guard dog, not a crazed runner! Love it. Glad I have it.
Easy to install. We used the end of a shovel and just pushed the tip into the ground in a kind of semi-circle, then laid the wire in. No problem.
Our house is a lot more calm now! Normally if the doorbell rang we all jumped into action, to our posts! Grab the beagle! Put up the baby gate! Try not to stand in the doorway to talk to whomever was at the door! Ack! This Havahart Fence Free Containment System makes things a lot nicer for all of us.

Good Dog Stay! - Amazon Review May 02, 2012
Reviewer: Kristen
I foster dogs and have a lab mix that is a fence climber. I was skeptical that this would keep him in but it actually works and he stays away from the fence now. Was easy to lay in front of my pipe fences.. Now when diesel goes to chase something in my pasture or sees someone in the road his collar emits a sound warning him.. He actually stays- I would like to get another collar for my other dogs but they are very pricey. This is a great system. Going to do a video of how well it works.

My family rescued a 4 year old poodle mix about 9 months ago. He is great with our four children. house trained and all...his one issue is he's a runner. He will run if the chance arises. We have a fenced backyard but, the front of our property and driveway area are not fenced. We ran into problems when we were in the driveway playing and the dog was fenced in (incessant barking) and then when the front door bell would ring and we would have to crack the door like we were receiving spy packages as to not let the dog run clear across the busy street we live in front of. Now that the weather is warm, we thought it would be nice to have the whole family outside together when we were playing basketball in the driveway or the kids were riding their bikes on the sidewalk in front of the house. The fence free containment system seemed to be the answer.
Installation: The actual installation was a breeze. It honestly took us longer to map out the area and figure out where we were going to break the circuit to allow our dog access. The whole "twisted wire" issue had us confused for a while...not how to do it, but making sure we were doing it properly while starting and ending in the garage. Once we laid out the wire the way we wanted it, we just went around and used a flat shovel to create a small indentation and put the wire in. When we went across the sidewalk and the driveway ramp, we just caulked over the wire to prevent it from coming up and anyone tripping over it. Once the wire was inserted in the ground all the way around, we were ready to go!
Use: We read the instructions on introducing our dog to the system and followed it somewhat. We felt like our dog was pretty smart and he has been outside with us before and although he's a runner, he's more of a runner of opportunity. He won't bolt immediately. He kinda acts like he's sniffing something, will then act like he doesn't hear you calling him and THEN he makes his move. So he did great with just walking the perimeter on a leash and hearing the warning and stopping and sitting at the boundary. Ah! could it be too good to be true? Well yeah. I decided to have my daughter ride her bike down the sidewalk and see if he would stop at the boundary (with leash attached and trailing) and he did trot right through the boundary. The recommended level 2 was not enough to get our dog's attention. We increased the level and the next time he trotted and didn't think to stop at the warning beeps, he got the picture. The next time we brought him to the boundary, he immediately sat when the warning tones came on.
Overall: The collar is a little bulky for our dog. He's a 19 pound poodle mix and the transmitter is a bit large in my opinion and I still have to use the regular collar because the transmitter does not have a ring to attach a leash. We just installed this fence this past weekend and our dog is DEFINITELY still in training, but I think eventually this will be a way for our furry family member to join in on our outdoor fun when we are in the front of the house. Glad we decided to do it ourselves instead of paying $1000 for a service to come and do it.

Reviewer: Frustrated Customer
I purchased this underground fence for our 12lb two year old terrier mix. We adopted her from the humane society and was told she was probably a runner. We found out that she was so we purchased the underground fence. The fence has kept her in the yard now (we followed the traning program exactly and it worked quite well), however, she gets corrected by collar in the house every now and then in our kitchen. I called customer service when we first realized this was happening and was told that appliances should not interfere with the underground fence and to try a lower boundry setting. We turned the boundry setting down to the lowest setting, however, our dog continued to get corrected in the kitchen. It didn't happen as often, but still did happen occasionally. I called customer service again to tell them of my continued problem and the rep I received told me that the collar shouldn't be worn in the house.because metal and appliances can set it off. I was surprised to hear this since it it not stated in any of their marketing materials, the owner's manual and the first rep I talked to never mentioned it to me either. I am very frusterated by this and feel that I was misled when I purchased the system. It is kind of a pain to have to take the collar on and off of our dog every time we let her out. We are hoping that now that she's learned the boundries in our yard that we can slowly wean her off of the collar.
RESPONSE FROM HAVAHART WIRELESS
NOVEMBER 08, 2012
Thank you for contacting us regarding the Havahart® Fence Free Underground Dog Fence (model 5140G). We apologize for any confusion. As with any underground fencing product, metal appliances interfere the signal communicated between the collar and the fence controller. This inference could send an erroneous signal to the controller that the collar (and your dog) has breached the trigger zone, therefore correcting your dog for doing nothing wrong. The safety of your dog is our utmost priority, so with that being said; we would recommend you remove the collar when your dog is inside the home. One additional note is that veterinarians do not recommend your dog wear an underground fence collar longer than 12 hours.
We would like to learn more about your experience and offer additional assistance. Please contact our Consumer Relations Team at 800-800-1819 x 453. We look forward to working with you!
Best regards,
Susan Consumer Relations Representative Woodstream Corporation
Q: How does the Fence Free containment system work?
A: The Fence Free uses a buried electric wire system to help train your dog to stay within the boundaries you set. Through training, your dog will learn to recognize the boundary visually (aided by flags), through an audio tone and a corrective static stimulus transmitted through the collar.
When the dog reaches the edge of the boundary signal, you will hear a warning tone that will last as long as the dog remains in the warning zone. If the dog moves away, the tone shuts off. If the dog continues toward the boundary, the initial low-level static stimulus occurs. If the dog still continues toward the boundary the preset full-level static correction will be administered. You can set this level of correction to individually suit your dog’s temperament.
Q: Will the Fence Free System work for my dog?
A: It’s important to remember that every dog has a unique personality and responds differently to stimuli.
While there is no way to know how your dog will react to the introduction of the training collar, Havahart products have proven effective for use with dogs of virtually every size and breed that is 6 months and older and weigh more than 8lbs.
For the safety and security of you and your dog, initial training should take place in a confined area where you have complete control over the situation.
Q: Is the Havahart Fence Free System safe?
A: The Havahart Fence Free System is safe and humane. To protect your dog and yourself, please observe the following safety precautions:
Never leave the collar on your dog for more than 12 hours at one time
Check collar fit each time you place collar on your dog– the collar must be fitted properly to work effectively
Check dogs daily for skin irritation and do not use the collar if the skin is irritated
Always use the lowest stimulation possible to train your dog
Q: How long will it take to train my dog?
A: Your commitment to training your dog will be the key factor to success. Training sessions should be 10-20 minutes long, 3-4 times per day. The four steps should take approximately three days each to complete.
Q: What happens if the wire on my Fence Free Containment System gets cut or breaks?
A: There are several ways to diagnose a broken wire for an underground dog fence. You will know that you have a broken wire because the loop indicator on your Fence Free Transmitter will not be lit. The best way is to use an AM radio. Tune the AM radio to 600 or 700 and go to your transmitter and turn on the radio. You will hear the signal. It will sound like a pulsing noise. Take your AM radio out to the area of your yard in which the Fence Free wire is buried. Hold the radio close to the ground and follow the wire around your property. At the point in the wire that the signal is lost or stops, this is where the break in the wire is. Dig up the wire and repair the wire.
Q: How do I repair a broken wire on my Fence Free Containment System?
A: The best way to fix a broken or cut wire is to splice the wire together using a wire nut or any common splicing tool. It is good to keep extra boundary wire around as the easiest way is to splice a new piece of wire to both ends of the broken boundary wire so you have slack and prevent the wire from pulling apart at the splice.
