How it Works:
The Fence Free In-Ground Dog Fence uses a combination of audible tone and/or corrective static stimulus to prevent the dog from exiting the fence boundary.
When your dog reaches the edge of the boundary, you will hear a warning tone that will last as long as the dog remains in the warning zone. If your dog walks away from the warning zone, the tone shuts off. If your dog continues to move towards the boundary, the initial low-level static correction occurs, encouraging your dog to remain in the boundary zone. If your dog still continues to move towards the boundary, the preset higher level of correction will be administered to attempt to prevent your dog from entering the boundary and into potential danger.
Multiple Correction Levels
The water-resistant collar receiver contains six levels of correction- Tone Only or Static Correction (5 levels) with Tone. You can set this level of correction to individually suit your dog. The first time your dog receives a correction, a normal reaction might be to yelp or jump because it was unexpected. Your dog learns where they are able and unable to go within the boundaries of your yard.
Works with Multiple Dogs
With the use of the Fence Free Extra Receiver Collar, your Fence Free Underground Pet Fence System can contain an unlimited number of dogs. Each collar can be set to its own correction level.
Easy to Setup
The wall-mount transmitter features an easy to set and easy to read control panel. The Power and Loop light offer constant confirmation that your fence is working properly.
You Control the Signal Width
On the transmitter you can also set the Signal Field Width. This is the area on each side of the wire that activates the warning tone and static stimulus level on the collar. There are 5 field width settings (from 3 ft - 24 ft) which you can adjust based on your yard size and temperament of your dog. The signal field is displayed digitally in the LED window.
Additional Safety Features
Run-Through Protection: When your dog runs towards the boundary, first a warning tone is emitted; if your dog continues towards the fence, the collar will emit another warning tone accompanied by a low level warning static stimulus; if your dog continues towards the boundary, he/she will receive the full level static stimulus that you have set. The factory default setting is the lowest level.
Over Correction Protection: If your dog becomes “trapped” or “confused” in the signal field, this feature limits stimulation. It does this by stopping the static stimulus after 10 seconds and not accepting any additional signal from the fence for 30 seconds; therefore stimulation of your pet is stopped. The collar will automatically revert to normal operation after this 30-second window.
Train your dog to play in your yard without the fear of the dog exiting the boundary with our Havahart® Fence Free Underground Dog Fence System. To ensure the maximum protection and freedom for your dog, please observe the following safety precautions:
Never leave the collar on your dog for more than 12 hours at one time. Pressure Necrosis is caused by extended pressure of the probes on the dog's skin, along with oil and direct that may accumulate on the probes. This can cause severe irritation of the dog's skin.
Check dogs daily for skin irritation and do not use the collar if the skin is irritated.
Only use the Havahart® Remote Trainer on healthy dogs, ages 6 months and older. Consult your veterinarian before using the collar if your dog has health problems.
Check collar fit each time you place collar on your dog – the collar must be fitted properly to work effectively. If the collar probes are not making complete contact with the dog's skin, the trainer will not work to its full effectiveness.
Always use the lowest stimulation possible to train your dog.

No problems with shipping or condition of product. It arrived within the stated time and the set up instructions were exactly as the seller described. I could not get my extremely social golden labrador to understand boundaries and I tried many training techniques and failed. I didn't want to put a "shock" collar on her. Finally I found this product which delivers a much milder notice that she is getting close to her boundaries. I followed the training instructions exactly and now I have a vivacious, sociable golden labrador that stays in her own yard. I chose the underground fence instead of the wire-free because I have steel siding on my home which interferes with the signal of the wirefree and we have many trees on our 2 acre lot.
Amazon Review December 10, 2012
Reviewer: C. Wollin
Our dachshunds were always running into the neighbors yards when we'd let them out, so it was either take them both on a leash each time (which was very time consuming) or risk having the neighbors aggravated while we chased them through their yards (which was also time consuming).
We followed the instructions in the booklet and set up the flags with the system turned off and walked the dogs around the perimeter on a leash, explaining that these were "bad flags." Every time we took the dogs out, the older one got better about avoiding the "bad flags." When we finally turned the system on and used no leashes, the older dachshund decided to test the boundary and got zapped. That did it for her, she decided the flags were indeed bad and has done very well staying within the boundaries. The younger one, who is usually easier to train, is still having difficulty understanding why she gets a little shock when she gets too close to the flags. She doesn't cross them, but she seems to still be curious about them, gets too close and gets a little zap. I can hardly stand it! She doesn't yelp or cry, but you can see the muscles in her neck tense up. The older dog no longer goes near the flags at all.
I would say this product works very well and was surprised at how quickly the dogs caught on. It makes it so much easier when they have to go out!
Q: How does the Fence Free containment system work?
A: The Fence Free uses a buried electric wire system to help train your dog to stay within the boundaries you set. Through training, your dog will learn to recognize the boundary visually (aided by flags), through an audio tone and a corrective static stimulus transmitted through the collar.
When the dog reaches the edge of the boundary signal, you will hear a warning tone that will last as long as the dog remains in the warning zone. If the dog moves away, the tone shuts off. If the dog continues toward the boundary, the initial low-level static stimulus occurs. If the dog still continues toward the boundary the preset full-level static correction will be administered. You can set this level of correction to individually suit your dog’s temperament.
Q: Will the Fence Free System work for my dog?
A: It’s important to remember that every dog has a unique personality and responds differently to stimuli.
While there is no way to know how your dog will react to the introduction of the training collar, Havahart products have proven effective for use with dogs of virtually every size and breed that is 6 months and older and weigh more than 8lbs.
For the safety and security of you and your dog, initial training should take place in a confined area where you have complete control over the situation.
Q: Is the Havahart Fence Free System safe?
A: The Havahart Fence Free System is safe and humane. To protect your dog and yourself, please observe the following safety precautions:
Never leave the collar on your dog for more than 12 hours at one time
Check collar fit each time you place collar on your dog– the collar must be fitted properly to work effectively
Check dogs daily for skin irritation and do not use the collar if the skin is irritated
Always use the lowest stimulation possible to train your dog
Q: How long will it take to train my dog?
A: Your commitment to training your dog will be the key factor to success. Training sessions should be 10-20 minutes long, 3-4 times per day. The four steps should take approximately three days each to complete.
Q: What happens if the wire on my Fence Free Containment System gets cut or breaks?
A: There are several ways to diagnose a broken wire for an underground dog fence. You will know that you have a broken wire because the loop indicator on your Fence Free Transmitter will not be lit. The best way is to use an AM radio. Tune the AM radio to 600 or 700 and go to your transmitter and turn on the radio. You will hear the signal. It will sound like a pulsing noise. Take your AM radio out to the area of your yard in which the Fence Free wire is buried. Hold the radio close to the ground and follow the wire around your property. At the point in the wire that the signal is lost or stops, this is where the break in the wire is. Dig up the wire and repair the wire.
Q: How do I repair a broken wire on my Fence Free Containment System?
A: The best way to fix a broken or cut wire is to splice the wire together using a wire nut or any common splicing tool. It is good to keep extra boundary wire around as the easiest way is to splice a new piece of wire to both ends of the broken boundary wire so you have slack and prevent the wire from pulling apart at the splice.
