Typical Coloring

Shih Tzus are commonly black, white, blue, brindle, gold, liver, red, silver, black gold and black white. They usually have markings of black, tan and white.

Shih Tzus are the optimists of the dog world. Upbeat with spunky personalities, they are content to lie on their owners’ laps and are very affectionate toward their owners. Though they are usually easy to train, they do have a stubborn streak.

Activity Level

Shih Tzus are playful dogs with a moderate amount of energy, but they do not require a lot of activity. Daily exercise can be as limited as a short walk or an intense game of catch in the yard.

Known Breed-Related Health Issues

Shih Tzus are an exceptionally healthy breed, with no major health concerns. Renal cortical hypoplasia, entropion, trichiasis, canine hip dysplasia, portacaval shunt and inguinal hernias are not common but still occur within the breed, while Von Willebrand Disease is seen occasionally.

Ideal Climates for this Breed

Shih Tzus have a low tolerance for hot and cold climates. With their thick, luxurious coats, they are especially averse to very hot weather.
