The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is considered an EXTRA LARGE dog based on the average height and weight.

 

Males – Height: 25.5 to 28.5 inches.

Weight: 105 to 140 pounds.

Females – Height: 23.5 to 27 inches.

Weight: 85 to 110 pounds.

Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs are commonly black. They have white and rust markings.

 

 

 

Temperament

Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs have some seemingly contradictory qualities. They are gentle yet bold, territorial yet easygoing, and sensitive yet at times unable to grasp certain training concepts. That can result in some frustration for owners, but they are still wonderful, devoted companions.

Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs are a large but low-energy breed. They do require daily exercise, such as a long walk or their favorite activity, pulling. They also require enough room to stretch their long legs while in the house.

Known Breed-Related Health Issues

The most common health concerns for Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs include gastric torsion, elbow dysplasia and canine hip dysplasia. Panosteitis, distichiasis and entropion are less common but still occur within the breed, while ectropion is seen occasionally.

 

 

 

Ideal Climates for this Breed

Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs have a low tolerance for hot climates and a high tolerance for cold climates.
