Average Height & Weight

The Cocker Spaniel is considered a MEDIUM dog based on the average height and weight.


Males – Height: 14.5 to 15.5 inches.

Weight: 24 to 28 pounds.

Females – Height: 13.5 to 14.5 inches.

Typical Coloring

Cocker Spaniels are commonly black, black and tan, red, white, silver, blue roan, cream, golden, sable and brown.





Cocker Spaniels are happy, gentle dogs with pleasant temperaments and sweet, playful personalities. They are eager to please their owners and respond quickly to commands. They are nicknamed “merry cockers” for their bubbly personalities.




Activity Level

Originally bred as hunting dogs, Cocker Spaniels require daily exercise, ideally a long walk. But they can also get enough activity from vigorous indoor games. They are very able swimmers.

Known Breed-Related Health Issues

The most common health concerns for Cocker Spaniels include cataracts, glaucoma and patellar luxation. Canine hip dysplasia, liver disease, seborrhea, allergies and progressive retinal atrophy are less common but still occur within the breed, while gastric torsion and elbow dysplasia are seen occasionally.




Ideal Climates for this Breed

Cocker Spaniels have a medium tolerance for hot and cold climates, but they are such social animals that they prefer to stay indoors with their families.
