Typical Coloring

Chihuahuas are commonly black, red, blue, fawn, chocolate, cream, white and silver.

Temperament

Though small in size, Chihuahuas are big in hearts and brains. They are a highly intelligent breed with sassy personalities, and they are very protective of their owners. Alas, because of their tiny stature, they are not effective guard dogs.

Activity Level

Chihuahuas are highly energetic, but because they are so small their exercise needs are minimal!

Chihuahuas can get enough activity running around the house and jumping while playing a game to meet their daily requirement. But they do enjoy going outside for a walk or having playtime in the backyard, and they adore going on outings with their owners.

Known Breed-Related Health Issues

The most common health concerns for Chihuahuas include pulmonic stenosis, hydrocephalus, patellar luxation, Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca and hypoglycemia. Many Chihuahuas have a soft spot in their skull because of incomplete fontanel closure. This breed is also prone to dental problems and should receive regular dental check ups from a young age.

Ideal Climates for this Breed

Chihuahuas have a low tolerance for cold climates but a high tolerance for hot climates. They naturally seek out warm spots.

Family Orientation
(good with kids, or other pets?)

Chihuahuas are extremely loyal and devoted to their owners, and that extends to children as well. Some bark a lot, which can alarm young children. They are generally good with other dogs and household pets, but are very reserved around strangers.
