Dog Treats You Can Make at Home

Back to Dog Articles »

When it comes to showing our dogs we care, nothing spells instant satisfaction quite like dog treats. Store-bought snacks such as pigs ears, rawhide bones and even prebiotic-packed chews offer convenience shoppers a quick fix — but for something truly fun, why not try dog treats you can make at home? These homemade dog treat recipes, courtesy of lifestyle expert and dog lover Martha Stewart and famed Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan, are fast, simple and healthy for your favorite furry friend.

Martha Stewart Loves Dogs

Martha Stewart, the home keeping doyenne and famously loyal chow chow owner, created this homemade dog treat recipe to popular acclaim. The recipe calls for easy-to-find all purpose flour, wheat germ, brewer’s yeast, salt, canola oil and low-sodium chicken stock.

Martha Stewart’s Delicious Homemade Dog Treats

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup wheat germ
  • ¼ cup brewer’s yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1½ tbsp. canola oil
  • ½ cup low-sodium canned chicken stock, plus additional for brushing
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Whisk together flour, wheat germ, yeast and salt in a medium bowl and set aside.
  3. Add oil to a new large bowl. Alternate adding stock and the flour mixture over three batches; begin and end with the stock. Mix well.
  4. Roll out dough over floured surface to about ½-inch thickness. You can also roll dough between two sheets of plastic on an un-floured surface. Cut out biscuits — Martha recommends a bone-shaped cookie cutter.
  5. Transfer treats to a parchment-lined baking sheet, and bake in preheated oven for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, brush with extra chicken stock and then bake 10 minutes more.

The Dog Whisperer Loves Homemade Treats

Is there any dog lover more famous than the Dog Whisperer himself, Cesar Millan? Cesar recommends these frozen treats as the perfect accompaniment to a big bowl of water on a hot summer’s day, but you can also keep these handy for after those vigorous play sessions that leave your dog panting in the wintertime. Even better, these Frozen Peanut Butter Yogurt Dog Treats are easy to make — what could be better?

Cesar Millan’s Frozen Peanut Butter Yogurt Dog Treats

  • 32 ounces vanilla yogurt
  • 1 cup natural or organic peanut butter
  • Cupcake papers
  1. Melt peanut butter in a microwave-safe bowl
  2. Combine peanut butter and chilled yogurt in a large bowl
  3. Pour mixture into cupcake papers placed in cupcake pans
  4. Freeze until solid. Remove filled cupcake papers and store in the freezer in a tightly sealed container

Homemade Treats Are Healthier, Less Expensive and Fun to Make

There are many recipes you can make at home that will delight and satisfy your pet. Not only are they simple to make, but the ingredients aren’t difficult to find — and they often cost less than buying prepackaged snacks at your grocery or pet care store. Even better, when you make your own dog treats you can prevent unhealthy additives from cluttering up your pet’s diet, making your dog as healthy as he is happy.
