Answers to the FAQs

Q:  Will the wireless fence interfere with my computer, TV, cordless phone, cell phone or garage door opener if I place the Controller (of the Radial-Shape Wireless Dog Fence) or Bases (Custom-Shape Wireless Dog Fence) near them?

A:   No. The Wireless Fence works on a different frequency than those used by these electronic devices.

Q:  Will the wireless fence interfere with my microwave when it is running?

A:   We recommend the Controller or Bases be placed at least 3 feet away from a microwave to ensure optimal performance.

Q:  When placing the 4 bases for the Custom-Shape Wireless Dog Fence in my home, what do I need to consider for best results?

A:   The 4 Bases should be placed in the corners of your home or attached garage on exterior walls. The Bases should be placed a minimum of 20 feet apart. The farther apart the Bases can be placed, the better they are able to communicate. The Bases need to be placed within 10 feet of an electrical outlet not operated by a light switch.

Q:  What objects in my home and yard might cause problems or interfere with my
      Fence Boundary?

A:   Objects that can interfere with your Wireless Fence include mirrors, microwaves, home appliances, electric power meters, air conditioning units, metal screened porches, metal downspouts, trees, large bushes and above-ground pools and sheds.

These objects can affect the size and shape of the Fence Boundary. Placing the Custom-Shape Bases or Radial-Shape Controller at least 3 feet away from, or above, these objects should minimize any undesired effects.

Objects that will cause considerable interference are aluminum siding, densely wooded lots and heavily landscaped properties.

Q:  How old should my dog be before I start training him with the fence?

A:  The Havahart® Wireless Dog Fences are designed for dogs older than 6 months and weighing more than 8 pounds.

The Radial-Shape2 Wireless Fence can accommodate small dogs with neck sizes of 10 to 17 inches and average dogs with neck sizes of 14 to 26 inches. The Custom-Shape Wireless Fence is only able to accommodate average dogs with neck sizes of 14 to 26 inches.

Q:   I have three dogs.  Can I use a Havahart® Wireless Dog Fence for all three?

A:   No. Both the Custom-Shape and Radial-Shape2 Havahart® Wireless Fences are able to contain 2 dogs.

Q:  Can the Havahart® Wireless Dog Fences be used on cats?

A:   No. The Havahart® Wireless Fences are designed for dogs only.

Q:  Can the Havahart® Wireless Collar be used on very small dogs like Yorkshire
      Terriers, Chihuahuas or Miniature Dachshunds?

A:  Yes, you can use the Havahart® Wireless Collar on smaller dogs as long as they meet the age and weight requirements of being over 6 months old and weighing over 8 pounds.

Another consideration is that the Wireless Collar for both systems weighs 4.2 ounces and has the same size Battery Housing, the difference between the small and average dog Collars lies in the Collar construction.

Q:  Which probes for the Havahart® Wireless Collar should I use on my dog?

A:  Use Short Probes for short-haired dogs and Long Probes for longer- or thicker-haired dogs.

Q:  If my dog manages to escape from the Roaming Area, will the Collar
      continue to correct my dog?

A:  The Havahart® Wireless Collar will correct the dog for up to 30 seconds and then times out. The correction is a pulsing sensation and is not constant. Both Systems will allow your dog to re-enter the Roaming Area without being corrected. Both Systems also resume normal operation once your dog is safely back inside the Roaming Area.

Q:   Will the Havahart® Wireless Collar correction harm my dog?

A:   No.  Mild Static correction is similar to static electricity. The Static correction is intended to get your dog's attention, not to harm him. If you are uncomfortable with your dog receiving a Static correction, you can set the correction level to Tone-Only.  It is highly recommended that you begin the training program with the Wireless Collar set to Tone-Only.

Q:  What is the right correction level for my dog?

A:  The right correction level is dependent upon your dog's age, size and temperament. It is highly recommended that you begin training with the Havahart® Wireless Collar set to Tone-Only. Afterward, the Collar can be changed to Static correctional level 1, or higher, as needed. Proper Collar fit, combined with thorough training, are key to the success of the System. Some dogs may require Tone-Only; however, others might require a higher Static correction level based on their temperament and ability to learn the Fence Boundary.

Q:  Can I use my Custom-Shape Havahart® Wireless Collar with my Radial-Shape
      Wireless  Fence?

A:  No.  Each Wireless Fence System utilizes different software.

Q:  Can I use a Custom-Shape Fence's Wireless Fence Tracker option with a MAC computer?

A:  No. The Wireless Fence Tracker is a Windows-based program.  However, the Wireless Fence Tracker is not necessary to use when setting up your Fence.  It is a troubleshooting tool that can be used by the Consumer Support team if you need assistance during the set-up process.

Q:  Can either Wireless Fence System be run on batteries?

A:  No. The Havahart® Wireless Radial-Shape2 Controller and the Custom-Shape Bases must be plugged into standard 120V AC power outlets.

Q:  What kind of batteries are needed for the Havahart® Wireless Collar and how long does a battery last?

A:  The Havahart® Wireless Collar requires a rechargeable RCR123 Battery. Motion Sensor technology allows the Collar to conserve Battery life when not in motion. Battery life will be dependent upon your dog’s activity level and the length of time he is on the System each day. Typical Battery life is 1 to 3 days. Both Systems come with 2 rechargeable RCR123 Batteries and a Battery Charger.  Charging typically takes less than 3 hours. It is recommended to always have a spare Battery ready to go.

Q:  Can both of the Havahart® Wireless Dog Fences be taken on vacation?

A:  Both the Radial-Shape2 and Custom-Shape Havahart® Wireless Fences are completely portable. However, remember that the dog will need to be retrained every time the fence location moves. Be sure to take all of the components and the Instruction Manual with you.

If you have the Custom-Shape Wireless Fence, your new location must be able to accommodate the requirement that the 4 Bases be positioned near power outlets and a minimum of 20 feet apart from one other. Also keep in mind the items which may attenuate the Wireless signal for each location and plan accordingly.

Q:   Can either of the Havahart® Wireless Dog Fences be used indoors to keep pets out of certain rooms/areas of the house?

A:  No. These Wireless Fences are designed to contain dogs outdoors only.

Q:  How large is the containment area?

A:  The Custom-Shape Wireless Dog Fence, the first customizable Wireless Fence, can create a Custom-Shape Roaming Area of up to 500 feet in any direction. The Radial-Shape2 Wireless Dog Fence can form a circular Roaming Area with a radius ranging from 40 to up to 400 feet. These are the largest dog containment areas available in the Wireless Fence market!

Optimal results are dependent upon an unobstructed, direct line of sight between the Fence Boundary and the System Controller/Bases.

Q:  Should my dog be on his leash the first time he gets a correction from the
      Wireless Collar?

A:  Yes. Your dog should be on the leash so you can readily show him the appropriate behavior (i.e. lead him back into the Roaming Area).  See the training program to learn how to train your dog to the Wireless Fence.

Q:  I have a small yard, my neighbors are close and the road runs close to the front of my house. Will a wireless system work for me?

A:  Possibly not.  But an Underground Dog Fence will definitely work. A few things to consider....  The Fence Boundary must be at least 20 feet from the Bases inside your home. Additionally, the Trigger Zone may be 6 to 13 feet. Lastly, for your dog's safety, your Fence Boundary should be at least 20 feet from any roadway and 20 feet from your neighbor's property line.

Q:  I live in a townhouse or condo. Can I enclose just my half of the yard?

A:  No, because both Radial-Shape2 and Custom-Shape Wireless Fence Systems need to enclose the entire yard.

Q:  How long will I need to keep my Havahart® Wireless flags up in my yard?

A:  After completing the 3 weeks of training, the flags should be left up anywhere between 2 weeks to a month. The length of time is completely dependent upon how well your dog responds to the training. Once you are confident that your dog is trained, you can begin by removing every other flag every few days until they have all been removed.
