Answers to the FAQs
Q: Will the wireless fence interfere with my computer, TV, cordless phone, cell phone
or garage door opener if I place the Controller (of the Radial-Shape Wireless Dog
Fence) or Bases (Custom-Shape Wireless Dog Fence) near them?
A: No. The wireless fence works on a different frequency than those used by these electronic devices.
Q: Will the wireless fence interfere with my microwave when it is running?
A: We recommend the Controller or Bases not be placed by a microwave to ensure optimal performance.
Q: What objects in my home and yard might cause problems or interfere with my
Fence Boundary?
A: Objects that can interfere with your wireless fence include mirrors, microwaves, home appliances, electric power meters, air conditioning units, metal screened porches, metal downspouts, trees, large bushes and above-ground pools and sheds.
These objects can affect the shape of the Trigger Zone and make it slightly different than desired. Placing the Custom-Shape Bases or Radial-Shape Controller at least 3 feet away from or above these objects should minimize any undesired effects.
Objects that will cause considerable interference are concrete walls, aluminum siding, metal roofs, densely wooded lots and heavily landscaped properties.
Q: How old should my dog be before I start training him with the fence?
A: The Havahart® Wireless Dog Fences are designed for dogs older than 6 months and weighing more than 8 pounds with a neck size of 14 to 26 inches.
Q: I have three dogs. Can I use a Havahart® Wireless Dog Fence for all three?
A: No. Both the Custom-Shape and Radial-Shape Havahart®Wireless Fences work with a maximum of 2 dogs.
Q: Can the Havahart® Wireless Dog Fences be used on cats?
A: No. The Havahart® Wireless Dog Fences are designed for dogs only.
Q: Can the Havahart® Wireless Collar be used on very small dogs like Yorkshire
Terriers, Chihuahuas or Miniature Dachshunds?
A: Yes, you can use the Havahart® Wireless Collar on smaller dogs as long as they meet the age and weight requirements of being over 6 months old and weighing over 8 pounds.
Another consideration is that the Wireless Collar for both systems weighs 3.7 ounces and fits neck size of 14 to 26 inches around.
Q: Which probes for the Havahart® Wireless Collar should I use on my dog?
A: Use short probes for short haired dogs and longer probes for longer or thicker haired dogs.
Q: If my dog manages to escape from his Roaming Area in my yard, will the Collar
continue to correct my dog?
A: The Havahart® Wireless Collar will correct the dog for up to 30 seconds and then time out. The correction is delivered through a prescribed cycle so that it is not constant. Both systems will allow your dog to re-enter the Roaming Area without being corrected. Both systems will resume normal operation once your dog is safely inside the Roaming Area.
Q: Will the Havahart® Wireless Collar correction harm my dog?
A: No. Mild static correction is similar to static electricity. Your dog will probably not like the static correction and may experience temporary discomfort. If you are not comfortable with your dog receiving a static correction, you can set the correction level to tone-only. It is highly recommended that you begin the training program with the Wireless Collar set to tone-only.
Q: What is the right correction level for my dog?
A: The right correction level is dependent on your dog and you. It is highly recommended that you begin training with the Havahart® Wireless Collar set to tone-only. Afterward, the Collar can be changed to static correctional level 1 or higher as needed. Proper Collar fit combined with proper training will usually allow you to keep the static correction level low. Some dogs may require tone-only; however, others might require a higher static correction level based on their temperament. The right correction level is dependent on your dog and you.
Q: Can I use my Custom-Shape Havahart® Wireless Collar with my Radial-Shape
Wireless Fence?
A: No. Each Wireless Fence system requires different software.
Q: Can either Wireless Fence System be run on batteries?
A: No. The Havahart® Wireless Radial-Shape Controller and the Custom-Shape Bases must be plugged into standard 120V AC power outlets.
Q: What kind of batteries are needed for the Havahart® Wireless Collar and how long
does a battery last?
A: The Havahart® Wireless Collar requires a rechargeable RCR123 battery. Although Integrated Motion Sensor technology allows the Collar to conserve battery life when not in motion, long battery life will be dependent on the degree of your dog’s activity during training and beyond. Typical battery life is 1-3 days. Both systems come with 2 rechargeable RCR123 batteries and a battery charger. Charging typically takes less than 3 hours. It is recommended to always have a spare battery ready to go.
Q: Can both of the Havahart® Wireless Dog Fences be taken on vacation?
A: Both of the Radial-Shape and Custom-Shape Havahart® Wireless Fences are completely portable. However, remember that the dog will need to be retrained every time the fence location moves. Make sure to take all the components and the Instruction Manual.
If you have the Custom-Shape Wireless Fence, your new location must be able to accommodate the requirement that the 4 Bases be positioned near power outlets and a minimum of 20 feet apart from each other. The Radial-Shape Wireless Fence does not have this requirement.
Q: Can either of the Havahart® Wireless Dog Fences be used indoors to keep pets
out of certain rooms/areas of the house?
A: No. These wireless fences are designed to contain dogs for outdoor use only.
Q: How large is the containment area?
A: The Custom-Shape Wireless Dog Fence, the first of its kind, can make a custom-shape Roaming Area of up to 500 feet in any direction. The Radial-Shape Wireless Dog Fence can make a circular Roaming Area with a radius of 40 to 400 feet. These are the largest dog containment areas available in the wireless fence market! Keep in mind that these distances are possible with flat open fields. Neither system will penetrate well through heavily wooded areas, hillsides, large buildings, etc.
Q: Should my dog be on his leash the first time he gets a correction from the
Wireless Collar?
A: Yes. Your dog should be on the leash so you can readily show him the appropriate behavior (i.e. lead him back into the Roaming Area). See the training program to learn how to train your dog to the wireless fence.
Q: How long will I need to keep my Havahart® Wireless flags up in my yard?
A: After completing the 2 week training program, the flags should be left up anywhere between 2 weeks to a month. The length of time is completely dependent upon how much time you spend training your dog on the system and how well your dog responds to your training. Once you are confident that your dog is trained, you can begin by removing every other flag every few days until they have all been removed.
