Custom-Shape Wireless Fence Example Property Layouts

The best part about a wireless dog fence is the ability to create a containment area for your dog without having to dig or bury wire. Since the signal is communicated wirelessly, obstructions such as aluminum siding, home appliances, dense trees, heavy landscaping and outbuildings interfere with the signal and prevent a consistent boundary from being established.

We realize that every property is unique and contains factors that might or might not adversely affect the success of a wireless dog fence. Below are a collection of properties grouped in whether or not they will be a suitable property for a wireless fence.

Successful Layouts for a Custom-Shape Wireless Fence

All successful layouts have:

  • Bases are >20 ft. apart inside the home
  • Fence Boundary >20 ft. from bases, road, and neighboring houses

Successful Layout #1

Layout 1

Why this layout works:

  • Clear line of sight for all bases to fence boundary
  • No trees, aluminum siding, or outbuildings to attenuate signal

Successful Layout #2

Layout 2

Why this layout works:

  • Fence Boundary >5 ft. from the tree line (this ensures direct line of sight)
  • Tree in backyard is included in the fence
  • Property has minimal obstacles which could prevent direct line of sight

Successful Layout #3

Layout 3

Why this layout works:

  • To avoid possible attenuation, outbuilding in back yard has been excluded from containment area
  • Trying to include this outbuilding would prevent the base from having a direct line of sight to the fence boundary. This will cause the boundary to 'dip' or attenuate.

Successful Layout #4

Layout 4

Why this layout works:

  • Bases have a direct line of sight to the fence boundary
  • Fence Boundary remains >5 ft. from the tree line in the back yard
  • Property has minimal obstacles which could prevent direct line of sight

Successful Layout #5

Layout 5

Why this layout works:

  • Fence Boundary is >5 ft. from tree line in back yard and in side yard.
  • To eliminate attenuation, the containment area does not include the front trees in the front yard.
  • Bases are placed on 2nd floor to prevent bushes in the back yard from attenuating signal

Successful Layout #6

Layout 6

Why this layout works:

  • To avoid possible attenuation, the Fence Boundary is >5 ft. from the tree line on sides of house
  • In order to prevent possible attentuation, the containment area does not include the trees in the front yard.
  • Property has minimal obstacles which could prevent direct line of sight

Successful Layout #7

Layout 7

Why this layout works:

  • Fence Boundary >5 ft. from the tree line in the back yard
  • To avoid possible attenuation, the large tree in the front yard has been excluded from the containment area
  • Property has minimal obstacles which could prevent direct line of sight

Successful Layout #8

Layout 8

Why this layout works:

  • Fence Boundary is >5 ft. from tree line in back yard
  • Property has minimal obstacles which could prevent direct line of sight

UNSUCCESSFUL Layouts for a Custom-Shape Wireless Fence

UNSUCCESSFUL Layout #1

bad layout 1

Why this layout will NOT work:

  • Heavily wooded areas (Red line) prevent the signal from communicating a consistent containment area. The wireless signal communicated from the bases needs a direct line of sight with the fence boundary in order to provide a consistent boundary.

What product will work with this layout?

  • Havahart® Fence Free Underground Dog Fence would be the ideal solution for this property layout and would require digging to insert the boundary wire.

UNSUCCESSFUL Layout #2

Bad Layout 2

Why this layout will NOT work:

  • Heavily wooded areas (Red line) prevent the signal from communicating a consistent containment area. The wireless signal communicated from the bases needs a direct line of sight with the fence boundary in order to provide a consistent boundary.
  • If you were to exclude the wooded area, the fence boundary would be < 20 ft. from the bases and would not provide a safe containment area for your dog and could lead to random corrections of your dog from the collar.

What product will work with this layout?

  • Havahart® Fence Free Underground Dog Fence would be the ideal solution for this property layout and would require digging to insert the boundary wire.

UNSUCCESSFUL Layout #3

Bad Layout 3

Why this layout will NOT work:

  • Heavily wooded areas (Red line) prevent the signal from communicating a consistent containment area. The wireless signal communicated from the bases needs a direct line of sight with the fence boundary in order to provide a consistent boundary.
  • If you were to exclude the wooded area, the fence boundary would be too small and the fence boundary would be < 20ft. from the bases and would not allow a consistent containment area to be established. This could result in random corrections to your dog from the collar.

What product will work with this layout?

  • Havahart® Fence Free Underground Dog Fence would be the ideal solution for this property layout and would require digging to insert the boundary wire.

UNSUCCESSFUL Layout #4

Bad Layout 4

Why this layout will NOT work:

  • The fence boundary is too close to the base placement (Red lines). This will prevent a consistent boundary from being established and could result in random corrections to your dog from the collar.
  • Neighboring houses are too close to establish a fence boundary that is >20 ft. from the base locations.
  • The large tree in the back yard will affect the direct line of sight needed for the wireless bases to establish a consistent fence boundary.

What product will work with this layout?

  • Havahart® Fence Free Underground Dog Fence would be the ideal solution for this property layout and would require digging to insert the boundary wire

UNSUCCESSFUL Layout #5

Bad Layout 5

Why this layout will NOT work:

  • The fence boundary is too close to the base placement (Red line on top). This will prevent a consistent boundary from being established and could result in random corrections to your dog from the collar.
  • Heavily wooded or landscaped areas (Red line on bottom) prevent a direct line of sight needed for the wireless bases to establish a consistent fence boundary. This will cause the fence boundary to be different from what you expect.

What product will work with this layout?

  • Havahart® Fence Free Underground Dog Fence would be the ideal solution for this property layout and would require digging to insert the boundary wire
